      1. Why?
      2. Ryan discusses some with Zack
    2. Deck outside Zack’s comfort zone - Boros / Aggro
      1. Lenny (@LennyWooley)
        1. Mono red is outside my comfort zone. I can brew it but I don't like playing it because it's not great at defense and I can't make plans with its card advantage.
        2. 5 color is also really tough unless I have a very specific idea in mind. Otherwise I get paralyzed by all the opportunity
        1. I struggle with playing blue. In particular the whole counterspell/draw go style. I feel bad countering someone's spell and even worse countering their commander, because I find it less enjoyable to play, I play it less which means I'm worse at it.
      2. Craig -(@Scraignoth)
        1. I'm an Aggro/Midrange player and have always struggled with control. I taught myself how to play control and that helped me to understand how better to fight against control. That being said blue is the color that eludes me the most but I'm always trying to expand my prowess in commander. my main problem is I'm a very proactive player and blue intrinsically plays a reactive game
      3. Andy Bently (@BentzMr)
        1. my main problem is I'm a very proactive player and blue intrinsically plays a reactive game
        2. After he left his comfort zone to play black - It took a second to get in a groove cause of what I’m typically drawn to, but once I got going, I really hit a groove. I kinda role played it. Since I’m a Dimir mage, I approached it as I was spying on everyone else to learn their secrets
        3. #MtgAmatureFinance also taught me what I don’t really like so I avoid spending on stuff that won’t hold my interest long term
      4. Chris von Doom (@chrisvondoom1)
        1. Discuss
      5. Four patrons have specifically spoken about blue control

    4. So, has anyone out there stepped outside their comfort zone? Let us know!

    1. Let’s summarize what virtualEDH.com is, and some of the cool features
      1. Person who’s turn it is is Highlighted! (anyone can use spacebar to change who’s turn it is)
      2. There’s a single button to click that flips your video around so it looks right-side up!
      3. Infect counter
      4. Lifetotal tracker
      5. Can add your commander and it shows up as hoverable under your life total
      6. Turn timer
      7. Best Feature: You can click on a card in play and it will pull it up (and retains a history of cards you’ve searched for this way). IMO this feature is 100% worth trying this site out
      1. How many people, and how long have you been working on it
      2. What are some enhancements that you have planned?
      3. Also, we noticed no voice, and I believe this was intentional, is that something we might see in the future?
        1. Specifically a way for someone to use their phone to display their boardstate, and another computer to join the game as a spectator to see everyone else's board?
      4. Any plans for mobile?
    2. Some questions for Adam and Jon
    3. Place for questions from Chat
  7. Main Topic - VirtualEDH.com

  5. Commander Rules!
    1. Disclaimer: Zack and I have played a total of 5 or so games of cEDH between us, so we are by no means experts
      1. EDH pushed to the limit, with no compromises made in deck building. All legal cards/combos are fair game, as is stax, etc
    2. What is cEDH?
      1. We both love EDH, and it felt important for us to educate ourselves on cEDH
      2. We don’t plan on becoming Competitive Social or anything like that
      3. Since cEDH is part of EDH we wanted to have some experience playing so that we can have a frame of reference when discussing.
        1. Here’s a good link: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/list-multiplayer-edh-generals-by-tier/
      4. We spent a lot of time reading about, and watching videos on cEDH, researched quite a few decks in the meta.

      6. We thought folks out there might find it interesting if they have never thought about venturing into cEDH territory

      2. Zack - Urza, Power Scepter
    4. Let’s talk about the decks we’ve made
      1. Played with Austin, and PJ from CommanderReplay
        1. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrudMyVbtvyVyadYddhousA
        2. https://twitter.com/CommanderReplay
        1. Players
          1. Austin was playing Gitrog
          2. Zack was playing a borrowed Prosh + Food Chain combo deck
          3. PJ was playing a Boros, Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero deck
          4. Ryan was playing Curious Control
        2. PJ won on turn 4 or 5 with Gerrard, Loyal Retainers, and Grinding Station
        3. I had no idea what was going on. Austin was very kind and offered me advice, but a control deck is pretty hard to pilot when you’re not sure what is going on, and what all is possible (Hard to know what to counter, for example)
      2. Game 1
        1. Zack was going to get a new pod going, and we were waiting for some players to finish, so Austin, PJ, and I decided to shuffle up for a 3 player cEDH game
        2. PJ ended up winning this one is similar fashion, although, I think I did bad things like cast a Fire Covenant at sorcery speed, and countered the wrong spells, and basically stifled Austin (playing Gitrog), and was essentially king maker
      3. Game 2
    5. Games we played at Mothership
      1. Ryan
        1. Man, I am BAD at this format. I think a lot of this is unfamiliarity, and I’m sure that will come with time.
        2. It’s really interesting to play with all of these crazy combos/busted cards that I don’t normally play with, at least not in this density in my decks
        3. I feel like there is potentially more shuffling than in a normal game, because so much of the game is DEPENDANT on your starting hand. I think this is true because in a regular game of EDH, there is more time for you to play catchup, and often time folks will leave you alone if you’re mana screwed. That being said, being able to play a whole game in under half an hour is pretty sweet
        4. Fighting battles on the stack is pretty interesting, and not something we tend to see a whole lot of in our local meta
        5. I feel like I’m less able to express myself through Deck-building in cEDH, because I feel like many/most of the card choices for any given deck are necessary/required. Maybe my thoughts on this will change over time? I just know that many of the goofy/random type things I like to do in regular EDH are not viable in cEDH (example: Mr. OPC). That being said, I still think cEDH is pretty cool, and I want to get to know the format better.
        1. Playing cEDH was very disorienting the first time because I was playing a borrowed deck, but I still had fun!
        2. Ryan and I played tonight against each other and it was only slightly less disorienting than the last time, but it was a little easier knowing the deck and I still had fun.
        3. I think mulling correctly is important. I think you want to mull aggressively to get at least part of your combo or cards to get your combo.
        4. To play cEDH seriously I think you would have to study the meta of tiered cEDH decks to be able to combat them when playing yours and when playing EDH I’d rather be surprised at what people are playing vs seeing a commander and knowing it’s exact lines of play.
        5. I’m interested in casually playing cEDH when opportunities arise and I def see the appeal to it.
      2. Zack -
        1. We made sure that all 4 people knew exactly what we were signing up for, and I think that’s important.
        2. Also, I think most cEDH players genuinely DON’T want to pub stomp.
        3. Playing a crazy tuned cEDH deck versus non cEDH decks doesn’t seem like it would be much fun for the cEDH player
      3. We were playing socially, and having fun with folks during the games of cEDH that we played.
    6. Our thoughts about cEDH
  6. Main Topic - Our First Foray into cEDH
    1. What do you think about cEDH? Have you tried it? Let us know your experiences!
    2. Commander is many things, to many different people. cEDH is just one way to play this game, and it’s a valid way to play.
    3. EDH and cEDH are not mutually exclusive. PJ and Austin both had non-cEDH decks with them, and we had fun playing a few games of regular EDH before we dove into cEDH
    4. It’s really cool that there are so many different ways to play Magic, and even with Commander there are many ways to play. Magic is a great game, and everyone should be allowed to enjoy it the way they like

          3. Dark Ritual
          4. Desperate Ritual

    2. What is Fast Mana? Cards that can give you more mana than they cost, the turn you play them
      1. Land, Fellwar Stone, Mana Vault, Sylvan Library
      2. Land, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Sensei’s Divining Top
      3. Are crazy starts like this bad?
      4. How often do starts like this happen?
      5. Do crazy starts happen like this all the time in cEDH? We don’t know, but maybe some folks out there can let us know?
      6. What’s the craziest start YOU’ve ever had?
    3. Fast Mana can enable some pretty crazy starts
      1. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/list-multiplayer-edh-generals-by-tier/
    4. Is fast mana one of the things that separates EDH from cEDH? We aren’t cEDH experts, but looking at the tier list here, it sees a lot of play in cEDH decks:
      1. Is this fair, given that nearly every EDH deck runs Sol Ring?
        1. Most of the cards on this list are more than $50, some as much as $200+
        2.
      2. If Mana Crypt were less expensive, would this argument still be happening?
    5. I’ve seen some folks on Twitter/Reddit complaining about their opponents using fast mana, oftentimes Mana Crypt is specifically called out.
      1. Does the way your deck is built change the amount of fast mana that is “appropriate”? If you’re playing Bird Tribal, is it OK to power up your deck with a little extra juice?
    6. How much fast mana is too much?
      1. http://bit.ly/ryan_stable
      2. http://bit.ly/zack_stable
      3. Example: Ryan has a morph deck, and it’s pretty derpy. That deck runs a lot of fast mana, just so it can be on a similar playing field as a lot of other decks Ryan plays against in our meta
      4. Zack talks about Emry here
    7. I don’t think running fast mana is good or bad, it’s just a thing decks can do. We play fast mana sometimes. Feel free to look at our stables:
      1. Ryan has a Gonti Deck, and it runs mana vault, but maybe that should just be Dark Ritual?
    8. Mana vault vs Dark Ritual
      1. Ryan: I think that in general the effect is pretty similar, but again fast mana ramps you for the current turn, whereas Ramp cards make subsequent turns of yours better.
      2. At least the social contract doesn’t frown on blowing up folks fast mana, like it does about destroying lands
    9. How does Fast mana compare to Ramp effects like Rampant Growth, Kodama’s Reach, Cultivate?
      1. Cards like Signets, Worn Powerstone, Fellwar Stone, etc
      2. Why are these cards less frowned upon?
    10. We run lots of “Slow Mana” in Commander, which essentially acts a lot like ramp

    5. The stable -> level up
      1. Near the end of 2017 I fell in love with Niv Mizzet, Parun. I’ve always loved drawing cards and being able to do damage to others was something I totally loved.
      2. I don’t claim to be great at building decks, but back then the way I built decks was way different than I do now. I didn’t exactly do slot theory and it was mostly just slam in good cards and hope for the best.
      3. I was doing pretty well with it for a while, but as time went on and I added more cards just for the heck of it the deck got worse and kind of fell out of favor.
      4. Near the end of 2019 I had been trying to make a draw-all-the-cards and take-all-the-turns type deck. At first I thought this would be a good strategy for Emry, but then realized, hey why not revisit Niv Mizz.
      5. The new theme for niv was Draw all the cards, take all the turns, and wheels.
      6. I have played five games with Niv since I have revamped and won all five.
    6. Niv Mizz, the Parun
      1. 1 Dictate of Kruphix Didn't love the symmetrical nature
      2. 1 Experimental Frenzy Didn't love how it played
      3. 1 Merchant Scroll removing tutors
      4. 1 Firemind's Foresight Never really knew what to fetch
      5. 1 Palinchron slotted in thinking i'd do a combo, but never did
      6.  1 The Mirari Conjecture didn't love how it played
      7. 1 Venser, Shaper Savant didn't love how it played
    7.  Cards I took out and why:
      1. 1 Arcane Signet Mana Fixing
      2. 1 Dictate of the Twin Gods double damage from things like commander and psychosis crawler
      3. 1 Expropriate Moar Turns
      4. 1 Insurrection Win Condition
      5. 1 Leyline of Anticipation Love instant speed everything
      6. 1 Mind's Eye Cheap Card Draw
      7. 1 Nexus of Fate Moar Turns
      8. 1 Thought Reflection Double Card Draw Double Damage
      9. 1 Torbran, Thane of Red Fell Extra Damage
      10. 1 Windfall Wheels
      11. 1 Dockside Extortionist Ryan said it was good
    8. Cards I added and why
      1. With the stable I can see what cards I’ve added and if something new doesn’t feel right you can always see what you removed.
      2. Decks need to have good synergies in them, not just combos or combos at all. Also just because a card is good, doesn’t mean it’s great for every deck.
      3. What is the deck you’ve revamped the most? Did it work out for you? We want to know.

  5. Commander Rules!
    1. Obligatory disclaimer - We’re not telling you how to feel. We are simply discussing the results of polling on the subject of milling and stating why we feel the way we do.
      1. Millstone
      2. An alternate way to win, also a way to fuel your graveyard (ie your second hand)
    2. What is Milling?
      1. This tends to be especially true for newer players. I know I used to feel this way when I first started playing Magic. I also used to look at the top card of my library after mulliganing, I don’t do this anymore. To the folks out there, do you look after mulliganing?
      2. Ryan’s Dad: story about using Millstone
      3. I want to possibly convince folks out there that this isn’t that bad, and could even be a good thing. Here’s how I convinced Zack
    3. Some players really get upset when they get milled or Cards taken with Gonti/Grenzo
      1. Ryan asked these questions
        1.  Why are you sad when you get milled?
        2. Do you feel sad when you don’t draw a particular card during a game?
        3. Would you feel differently if the cards went to the bottom of your library instead of your graveyard?
        4. How would you feel if you could start with half of your deck in your graveyard?
        5. The mental energy you’re expending on thinking about the cards you could have drawn (or got milled), could be put to better use, like making a plan.
        1. Any number of possibilities could have been. Due to variance there is no way to guarantee the cards that would have milled would have been drawn.(Maybe a better way to phrase this is, it kinda just changes where your opponent cut your deck)
        2. The more you know what’s in your graveyard, the more you know about the other cards in your deck
      2. Zack said in general being milled made him feel slightly sad about the possibilities that could have been.
        1. Cards in hands are actual possibilities
        2. In this same way, cards taken with Gonti aren’t the same as cards taken with Blatant Thievery/Expropriate, cause you didn’t invest any resources like card/mana into the things being stolen
        3. Cards in your graveyard are a resource as well. Your opponent could cast Patriarch’s Bidding or Exhume for example
        4. Sometimes it does sting if your deck is built on a specific 2 card combo. I try not to rely on specific cards, because there’s no guarantee you’re going to see them during a game, unless you run a LOT of tutors, and that’s something I don’t frequently do.
      3. Being milled isn’t the same as discard
    4. This conversation started after a game with Zack and Ryan where Ryan played Mesmeric Orb and Zack expressed annoyance about being milled.
      1. How does it make you are milled by an opponent
        1. Happy - 25%
        2. Indifferent - 47.4%
        3. Sad - 20%
        4. Responses - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LMNxiqw6fM1_9_x6yz_4x66ukUiJbFj54FD7S3sre00/edit#gid=0
        1. Happy - 24.4%
        2. Indifferent - 47.4%
        3. Sad - 28.2%
        4. Responses - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LMNxiqw6fM1_9_x6yz_4x66ukUiJbFj54FD7S3sre00/edit#gid=898744610
      2. How does it make you feel when an opponent's Gonti, Lord of Luxury targets you.
    5. We polled twitter and the general consensus was…
      1. Information about what’s left in your deck
      2. Deck thinning?
      3. An increasing number of EDH decks revolve around some sort of graveyard strategy.
    6. The upsides milling
      1. Run removal for the things that are milling you.
      2. Giant Eldrazi like Kozilek, Butcher of Truth or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
      3. You can run cards like Homeward Path
    7. What to do if you are being milled are cards taken
    8. Summary - Being milled can actually be a good thing. So what do you think about being milled? Let us know how you feel on twitter or in the comments.

  5. Commander Rules!
    1. Disclaimer: We’ve both got pretty deep collections, and so we know a lot of times our content isn’t super Budget-Friendly, but we wanted to bring you some Budget Friendly content
      1. Start with a Commander Precon Deck
        1. You can’t windmill slam a Cyclonic Rift in.
      2. With between $5 to $10 in upgrade money from each session you had to get creative with the cards you put in.
      3. With this restriction you’re forced to find cards you might not have considered otherwise that might end up being really good.
      4. This also levels the playing field in terms of expensive cards
    2. We’ve often played in Budget Commander Leagues
      1. Commander’s Brew - https://www.commandersbrew.com/
      2. Commander’s Quarters - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-w5MNByr4SNy3z2232sj0g
    3. Other Budget conscious content creators
      1. Looked at the Top 100 cards from EDHRec, and 23 were less than $1
        1. Most of the 23 cards broke down into a few categories:
          1. Mana Dorks
            1. Llanowar Elves
            2. Elvish Mystic
            3. Avacyn’s Pilgrim
            1. Rampant Growth
            2. Farseek
            3. Signets: Golgari, Gruul, Selesnya, Simic
          2. Ramp
            1. Mortify

    4. Data from EDHRec
      1. Commander is becoming more and more popular, and that is making it more and more expensive to play, but Budget options exist, and they can be quite potent. Additionally, it’s always fun to try and level the playing field, and get your playgroup to make a budget deck or two, or do a league with the precons
