    1. 101.4
  6. Commander Rules!
    1. I recorded all of my games for the entire year of 2019, and I think this is something listeners might enjoy doing, and if not that, at least be interested in hearing about my games for the year
      1. Listeners, we want to know if you enjoyed this type of episode, and we’d love to hear if you start recording your games!
      1. Explain how I recorded all the results
        1. Take notes with Phone, and then transfer to a spreadsheet at the end of the year (Might be better to start off with a spreadsheet at the beginning of the year)
        2. I’ll make a template from my spreadsheet and share it with all of you! - http://bit.ly/CS_gamelog
        1. Date
        2. Location
        3. Player 1 (usually me): Deck Played
        4. Player 2: Deck Played
        5. Player N: Deck Played
        6. One or two sentence summary of who won, and how they won
      2. An entry looks like so:
    2. Methodology
      1. Zack makes a guess at all of these:
        1. How many games played?
        2. How many games Zack played with me?
        3. Where did I play most often?
        4. What percentage of games were 2,3,4,5,6 player?
        5. Which deck I played the most? How many times?
          1. Dive in a bit here
        6. Which deck had the best win percentage?
        7. How many different decks I played?
        8. How many different people did I play against this year?
          1. Who did I have the best record against? (played 5 or more times)
          2. Who did I have the worst record against? (played 5 or more times)
        9. Notable win/loss ratios against people?
        10. My overall win/loss percentage?
        11. Zack’s overall win/loss percentage?
    3. To the Numbers!
      1. It was really fun and interesting to record all of my games for the year. I really do encourage listeners out there to do this. It all started with a question to myself “How many games of Commander do I actually PLAY in a year?” Audience, was this interesting? Please let us know. Hope everyone out there has a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful Holiday season.

  7. Commander Rules!
    1. Zack - Sometimes I have trouble knowing when to use removal, and I thought maybe other folks out there might feel the same
      1. New players sometimes use removal as soon as they have it to cast

    2. There were a total possible 79 Commanders from 2019. Here’s the search we used to generate that: https://scryfall.com/search?q=year%3D2019+-is%3Areprint+is%3Acommander&as=grid&order=name   (Thank you Scryfall!)

      2. Commander 2019 was an AWESOME year for Commander, and 2020 is shaping up to be an even MORE amazing year for Commander! If we do another show like this next year, it’s probably going to be a LOT harder :)

  4. Ep 25 Community Spotlight:
    1. 601.2f, 601.2g
  5. Commander Rules!
    1. Having a plan Starts even before you sit down to a game
      1. It happens when you’re building your deck
        1. Decks should have a plan and ultimately, aside from everyone having fun while playing, this plan should end in winning.
        1. Games vary wildly, be ready to adapt your plan, or drop it all together
          1. Sometimes the board gets clogged up, and you need to wait on a Board Wipe before you commit anymore resource
          2. Sometimes an opponent casts Wheel of Fortune, or Windfall, and now you have to come up with a new plan, cause your old plan is in the graveyard
          3. Sometimes you may have to rely on resources outside your deck, like Politics
      2. Be ready for your plan to change at a moment’s notice
        1. Super Friends
        2. Poison counters
        3. +1/+1 Counters
      3. Some Commanders facilitate having a plan more than others. Example, Atraxa, Praetors’ Voice
      4. Some Commanders are harder: Example Ertai the Corrupted, Tatyova, Benthic Druid
        1. Zack - I have lots of ideas for decks and I’ll see cool commanders that have sweet synergies that allow me to do cool things like generate infinite mana, draw a bunch of cards, or do other things like that, but I always have a problem finishing games.
        2. If you remember from two episodes ago, a slot ryan and I didn’t overlap in was wincons. This is because I like to specifically spell out what cards I plan to use to win, whether it be a combo or an eldrazi.
          1. Ryan - This is how I win :)
        3. Most games I kind of spin my wheels and do things, but I rarely win.
      5. Plan for your win-cons
        1. Example: Ryan has an Aryel, Knight of Windgrace deck, and cannot win outside of the combat step. Glacial Chasm/Constant Mists are nearly impossible for that deck to beat
          1. Maybe add some cards like Skull Storm or Approach of the Second Sun, or Torment of Hailfire
          1. Maybe play a card like Meteor Golem (Thanks to Matt Jorgenson @MetalMatReturns)
          2. Maybe a Laboratory Maniac or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries
          3. Maybe Rite of Replication or Echo Storm
        2. Emry, Lurker of the Loch gets completely shutdown by Rest in Peace
      6. Maybe even have a backup plan or two.
      1. Attacking with fat creatures. Oftentimes this is accentuated with a little bit of the ole Craterhoof Behemoth, or Overrun, or Triumph of the Horde
        1. Mirrodin besieged
        2. Darksteel Reactor
        3. Revel in Riches
        4. Mortal Combat
      2. Alternate condition win cons
        1. Sharuum, Phyrexian Metamorph, Bitter Ordeal
        2. Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond
      3. Comboing out the table
      4. Milling Out someone, or Large amounts of mana and a Stroke of Genius
        1. Exsanguinate
        2. Torment of Hailfire
        3. Expropriate
        4. Past in Flames
        5. Mizzik’s Mastery
      5. Big Mana/Spells
    2. So what are some common Win Cons?
      1. You’ll find games easier to navigate when you have a plan. It’s also a good idea to build in some backup plans, and maybe even some cards to counterspell or protect your primary plan. So plan on tuning into us next week for more Commander Content

  2. Ep 24 Community Spotlight:
    1. 500.1
  3. Commander Rules!
    1. This topic is a little more on the psychological side of things, but I thought it would be an interesting thought experiment about why we play magic, and maybe why we like Commander chief amongst formats
    2. So, WHAT is Working for a Win? To me, it’s the notion that a close game or a hard fought game is more satisfying to win.
      1. I played a LOT of video games in the 80s.
        1. Super Mario Brothers
        2. Zelda
        3. Mega Man
        4. Metroid
        5. Ghosts n’ Goblins
      2. These games were TOUGH! If you didn’t grow up playing these games, and you’ve never gone back and played them you can look up ppl playing these games on youtube
      3. Zack’s game was X-Com UFO Defense
      4. In order to beat many of these types of games, it required a LOT of persistence, and banging your head against a wall in frustration. Many of the games didn’t have a save system, so you just had to play repeatedly until you got good enough to beat them.
      5. There weren't any walkthroughs you could look up on the internet. There wasn’t internet.
    3. Part of this may stem from growing up during the time that we grew up
      1. - That euphoric feeling when you finally DO best a video game.
        1. I remember I got in front of my TV and got my parents to take a “selfie” (ie polaroid) of me standing next to the credits when I beat the original Final Fantasy NES game.
      2. Zack -  didn’t really get into beating games until college / post college when I beat the first few Halo games in a row as well as the first couple of Gears of War. It was an awesome feeling knowing these games were pretty difficult and there were a lot of times I just had to keep playing through to keep going. I remember getting soo mad at this on thing in GoW where I was behind like a counter and there was a dude on a cannon and two dude covering him and I’d jump out and die almost immediately. It took me two days to beat that I i remember being immensely proud when i did.
    4. So WHY do we like working for a win?
      1. Disclaimer: This next bit mostly applies to Multiplayer games.
        1. I think Magic players WANT a good game. I think most people would describe a good game as one that is CLOSE. Essentially, I think Magic players want to WORK for their WINs. (Audience, do you think this is true?)
        2. Even coming from a Standard / Modern grinder perspective games that are blowouts always felt like hollow victories.
      2. If a game is a good game, and a close game, it will often feel like a puzzle. We as humans like feeling smart, and so it’s only natural that we enjoy solving puzzles. Part of what makes Magic such an amazing game is that it continually generates new and unique puzzles for us to solve.
        1. Example story about Dana getting 6 alt-lose kills in-a-row in back-to-back games.
          1. Mirrodin Besieged:
            1. 2U Enchantment:
              1. As Mirrodin Besieged enters the battlefield, choose Mirran or Phyrexian.
      3. Getting good stories. Games where you have to Work for your Win often generate good stories. Another thing about us humans, we enjoy a good story.
    5. HOW does working for a win apply to Magic?
  4. Main Topic - Working for Wins
  • Mirran — Whenever you cast an artifact spell, create a 1/1 colorless Myr artifact creature token.
  • Phyrexian — At the beginning of your end step, draw a card, then discard a card. Then, if there are fifteen or more artifact cards in your graveyard, target opponent loses the game.
          1. Atemsis, All-Seeing
            1. 3UUU 4 / 5 Flying Sphinx
            2. 2U tap: draw two cards then discard a card
            3. When Atemsis, all-seeing deals damage to player you may reveal your hand and if there’s 6 different mana costs in the hand that player loses the game
          1. Once in league i was playing niv mizzet and just went off. I don’t remember exactly what happened, but I remember everyone at the table was cheering for me to get the win and I did!
        1. Zack any good stories you want to share?
          1. Zack - This speaks to my philosophy on EDH where I don’t care if i win or loose, I just want to see crazy things happen! I want to have awesome stories to tell whether I win or lose!
        2. Also, I think that games with good stories are more satisfying for EVERYONE involved, win or lose.
        1. Ryan - I personally haven’t played very much cEDH
        2. cEDH players players probably do a fair amount of this, cause they have lots of interaction to fight through, so maybe their deck wins in the same way most games, but they are trying to balance WHEN to go for it, and when to leave up interaction for their opponents
        3. If you’re out there, and you like/play a lot of cEDH, holler at us, and let us know if this is correct, and how you might feel.
      1. cEDH (or Competative EDH) may really feel like this.
        1. This is why we have the talk to ensure everyone is playing an equally powered deck and thus have an equal chance at winning.
      2. Why we all want decks of similar power levels, so that each game is not just a cake walk. Cake walks don’t generate good stories.
      3. Ryan - Working for a win is part of why I personally don’t like playing a LOT of tutors. I do play some, but I often find I like to play more narrow tutors
      4. Working for a win is also probably a lot of the reason that I like playing with O.P.C. (cause it oftentimes makes the puzzle harder, or at least more interesting, AND the pieces of the puzzle change depending on WHO I’m playing against)
      5. Zack - working for a win for me is why i always like to play some convoluted combo in my decks, but not run tutors for them. I like the idea of having to fight to survive long enough to get the pieces assembled. Usually these are alt win cons.
      1. Magic is the best game ever, and the ability to work for our wins is probably a big part of what makes magic so good. Did we get this right? Do you enjoy working for your wins? Let us know in the comments below, or via Twitter

    1. 800.4, 800.4a
  5. Commander Rules!
    1. What is the stable?
      1. It’s a place to keep the decks you play often, up-to-date.
        1. This is not for ALL of your decks (unless you only have a few decks)
        2. I have like 25 decks, and I’m not proposing to keep up with all of them, I’m proposing that you select the true gems, the ones you you always have fun playing, and thinking about
        1. This can be nice if you have decks in many different tools, such as Tappedout, or Archidekt, or the new Scryfall Deck Editor
      2. It’s a single place you can access that has all your decks in one place.
      3. There’s a social component to the stable as well. I propose that folks can share their Stable with other people, and that it can be a way to let other people (in person and on the internet) get to know them. A business card that you can hand to other folks that says “I’m this kind of Commander player!”
      4. I like the idea of doing this because I am constantly updating decks, but don’t have a way to track those changes and if they are improvements or not. Ryan - Historical Data!
        1. The chances of getting a deck exactly the way you want it the first time you play it is pretty slim.
        2. This lets you track what’s working for you and not working for you.
      5. A way to force us to consider upgrading decks
      6. Summary - This probably isn’t a new idea, and it’s probably something that some of you out in audience land already do. I just wanted to establish this idea, and get some conversation around this topic, maybe also establish some common terms we can use in this discussion. Also, I’m really bad at updating decks, and we’ll see this when I get to my personal Stable later this episode
      1. This is player dependant, but the more decks in your stable, probably the less attention you can give to each deck.
      2. Probably no more than 10 depending on how often you play.
    2. How many decks should be in a stable?
      1. Spreadsheets Obvs!
    3. How are we going to keep track of this?
      1. discussion
    4. Always brewing new decks (Ryan) vs Constantly seeking new cards to upgrade current decks (Zack)
      1. Available to the public here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uWr1dnkuHoyinfyCGf3A2g1WTcTLi6L5
        1. Created 8/22/2019
        2. Recently Updated! (4 cards in, and 4 cards out)
      2. Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer
        1. Created 2/26/2019
        2. There are some new cards I’m really excited to put in here (Tome of Legends and Robber of the Rich). I also know there are a few cards in here which are underperforming, and me getting all analytical about my Stable is going to help me put in the effort to keep the decks I love shiny and performing well
      3. Grenzo, Havoc Raiser
        1. Created 6/17/2017
        2. This was originally a “found deck”
        3. This is one that I’ve added and removed some cards from, but I can’t tell you what they are, because I haven’t been keeping track of it
      4. Gonti, Lord of Luxury
        1. 11/15/2018
        2. This deck is literally unchanged from when I built it. Granted, I had a great starting point to launch from (Thanks Jumbo Commander). This deck is really fun, and I play it all the time, and it deserves some attention.
      5. Braids, Conjurer Adept
        1. 12/18/2015
        2. Last, and definitely not least. This is probably my oldest deck, that I still consistently play. One of the reasons I’m so hesitant to update this deck is that it is one of my favorites, and it’s really hitting the sweet spot between flavor and function, and I don’t want to mess it up. If I keep the historical data, I can always go back to a previous version of the deck, and I don’t have to be scared of messing it up

  2. Ep 17 Community Spotlight:
    1. Welcome! You’re discovering the BEST format in Magic: the Gathering (We maaaay be biased, but hey)
    2. Who is this episode for? We assume that you are at least slightly familiar with Magic. Maybe you played a long time ago, maybe you’re brand new to the game, but you at least know the basic rules. Also, we think veteran players might enjoy listening to this episode, and we certainly hope that anyone out there will send this episode in particular to new players they teach, or anyone who is interested in learning about the greatest Magic format.
  3. Main Topic - New to Commander

  • What is Commander?

  1. Arguably the MOST popular Magic format of all time!
  2. 40 life, multiplayer format, where you have a Legendary creature as your Commander
    1. Example: You choose Meren of Clan Nel Toth
    2. This means you can play Black Cards, Green Cards, Black AND Green cards, and any number of artifacts you want. You cannot play with White, Blue or Red cards. To further clarify you cannot play with Terminate because it’s got Red in it’s color identity
    3. Hybrid mana cards (Ex. Kitchen Finks) are both GREEN and WHITE in terms of color identity. So, Kitchen Finks cannot go in a mono-green deck.
  3. Your Commander’s Color Identity determines what cards you’re allowed to play.
    1. This means that you can only play ONE of each non-basic land card
  4. Commander is a 100 card SINGLETON format
    1. SO MANY! Cards all throughout the history of Magic
    2. There is a Banned list maintained at: http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php
    3. It’s actually a pretty small list, 39 cards at the time of this recording (In ALL the history of Magic)
  5. What cards are you allowed to play with?

  • Why is Commander so great?

  1. It’s a SOCIAL format! Commander can be a time when you get together with your friends and just have a good time and laugh etc.
    1. I’ve made some life-long friends playing Commander
  2. The community is Amazing! We constantly see newcomers welcomed with open arms, and folks are always happy to help people become part of this community
    1. Ryan likes to play with Other People’s Cards, and built a whole Mono-red deck around it
  3. Personal expression! Commander is a format where players can really express themselves through the decks they build and how they play
  4. It’s the Battlecruiser format of Magic! Folks can play with the biggest, baddest cards, and there is more game space to have crazy things happen that wouldn’t in a normal game of Magic.
  5. Your skill in politics can be just as important as the power level of your deck. This leads to a natural balancing effect, where the power dynamics shift as the game goes on
    1. You can play super casual, all the way up to cEDH (Explain here that the format started off as Elder Dragon Highlander, a.k.a EDH, and that cEDH stands for Competitive EDH)
    2. It’s important to find a playgroup that fits your style, and power level.
  6. There are different levels of power when it comes to Commander

  • How to get started

  1. Start with a precon! There’s no better time than now
  2. Find out when Commander Night is at your LGS.
    1. Decide who your commander is going to be. This can be a favorite legendary character from days past or it could just be a commander who has a mechanic you find interesting.
      1. Decide a plan of attack
      2. Look for cards that synergize with your commander or just look fun to play with.
      3. Use sites like Scryfall to do searches for specific things (ie. Landfall)
      4. If you’re coming up short of a full 100 you can do internet research on sites like edhrec and archidekt for deck lists
      5. Remember this is your deck, so build it in a way that will be fun for you and those you play with.
    2. How to decide what cards to put in
  3. Zack’s steps to make your first commander deck

  • Tips for a new player

  1. Tips from Discord and Twitter go here
    1. Ramp and Card draw are the building blocks of Commander
      1. Briefly Define Ramp and Card Draw
      2. With 40 starting life total, you can usually afford to spend the first few turns ramping. This will allow you to cast bigger cards, more quickly, and have a bigger impact on the game
      3. You are usually playing against 3 other opponents. So, for every card you draw, your opponents are collectively drawing 3. Having more card draw can lessen this difference.
      4. There are many reasons to want Ramp and Card Draw. Whole episodes can be devoted to these topics, but this is a good place to start
      1. Especially for new players coming from other formats that is a weird and unintuitive thing but it's important to understand this or there will be some social tensions and feel bads
    2. How the social contract works.
    3. Mana curve matters.
    4. Build a deck with a game plan and a direction
    5. Threat assessment, or more accurately, how to effectively deal with problem permanents/spells without drawing a ton of hate.
    6. How to build a solid mana base/ramp package.
    7. Settle on a list before buying singles.
    8. The stack
    9. Priority
  2. Play removal! Especially for artifacts and enchantments
  3. Board Wipes are important, but so is single target removal
  4. It’s OK to take time to READ all the cards! Don’t be intimidated by this, even myself as a veteren player, I have to read a card just about every turn of the game!
  5. There’s a LOT of cards, and this can be kinda scary, but it’s OK to NOT know everything

  • Resources for learning more

  1. So. You’re interested is peeked, and you want to dive deep into this wonderful format, where can you go to learn more?
    1. Edhrec.com
    2. http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php (pay particular attention to Philosophy of Commander and the social contract: http://mtgcommander.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19170 )

  • Summary

    1. Commander is great! And now is a great time to be a Commander player with the new C19 decks just having come out.
    2. It’s a fun, Social format, to share with friends
