- Disclaimer: This is strictly for Casual EDH, cEDH players don’t necessarily face this issue, but I bet they do key in on Thrasios/Tymna (or whatever the best Tier 0 deck is). Also, I imagine our local meta could influence this a bit.
- There are lots of Commanders that fit this description. The first one of these I remember was Narset, Enlightened Master (September 26, 2014). The combination of hexproof and lots of extra turn/combat steps makes the deck super hard to interact with. It often feels like you have to have a board wipe on the exact turn they play Narset. I was so bummed, because I opened up a foil copy.
- You know this type of Commander, because when you sit down to the table, you immediately feel defensive. For example, when I sit down with my Emry deck, I always immediately let people know that it’s construct tribal, but still has some power/ramp in it.

- Disclaimer: Commander is a SOCIAL game, winning isn’t everything, so watch with care how far you go down the competitive path.

- That being said, winning IS fun. And I’m sure there are lots of folks out there that would like to get better at Commander.
- It’s so much easier to make an episode about building better decks, it’s much harder to make an episode about how to help folks get better.
- Step 1: Admit that you are making mistakes.

- It’s going to be hard to fix mistakes if you aren’t making any.
- It’s also MUCH harder to identify some types of mistakes in Commander vs Limited or Standard/Modern. This is because the consequences of making a mistake in a 1v1 game happen quite quickly after you make them, and often lead to the game being over.
- Changing the way you think about variance may also help. Think about what information you had instead of complaining about why you didn’t win.

- My opponent had the exact spell they needed to win! (Did they tutor one or more times that game?)
- I just needed one more turn! (Did you fail to realize an opponent was just a card away from a combo?)
- I got mana screwed/flooded! (Are you playing enough lands in your deck? How about ramp? Should you have mulliganed?)
- Everyone ganged up on me! (Were you playing Atraxa? Did you get off to an early lead?)
- Your first instinct should be to avoid blaming a loss on variance. This is not to say that variance doesn’t happen, and often-times variance does lead to bad times for you, but it your first instinct is to blame variance (Blame Variance!), then you may take the easy way out, and not really take the time to think about how you played that game
- Think about the things you played, and how folks responded.
- Did you make a play that aligned the whole table against you? Could/should you have waited to play it till later?
- Did you misidentify the biggest threat at the table?
- Did you leave a problematic permanent on the table for too long, hoping someone else would take care of it?
- Did you fail to realize that two of your opponents were going to team up, and 1-2 punch away your pillow fort?
- Did you take out the wrong player, when you had your chance to kill any of your 3 opponents?
- Should you have mulliganed?
- Ask them if they noticed any misplays on your part.
- Ask them what cards they had in their hand at the end of the game.
- It really helps if you can talk with your opponents after the game, especially if they are people you think play well!
- Think about your game, immediately after you play it. Reflect on how the game went.
- Sequencing!

- Can be something as basic as playing your lands in the wrong order. Or tapping your lands incorrectly.
- Sometimes this is obvious, sometimes it’s not. Like sometimes you might not notice that there was a better way to sequence things, but sometimes you might not even think about sequencing things
- Honestly, this is one of harder things in Commander, because board states get so cluttered, so quickly. And you may forget you need to take out that Blind Obedience before you cast your Hasty creature.
- I think this is sometimes tricky for newer players, especially when playing against new opponents, or decks in an unknown meta.
- This can also include playing a card that is going to scare the other players into attacking you, thinking that it’s less scary than what some other opponent already has going on. An example could be playing Aura Shards, and not knowing that one of your opponents has 3 very important enchantment/artifacts in hand. You may not know this is a likely scenario, unless you’ve played against that player’s deck more than 1 time before.
- Incorrectly assessing threats
- Forgetting that your opponent played a Sylvan Safekeeper on turn 2.
- Not doing the math on how much damage you were going to take from 2 of your opponents having a Zulaport Cutthroat in play before you cast a board wipe
- Failing to notice an onboard trick
- These are not the droids you are looking for (or not hitting your saving throw versus a savvy political opponent
- So many times people make a deal, and get nothing out of it. Like someone promising not to attack you for two turns, when it’s obvious they weren’t planning on attacking you anyway
- Making a bad deal
- Making too many deals, and painting yourself into a corner
- Picking the wrong person to go to the final 2 with.
- Political
- Types of mistakes
- This can be a tricky thing. We are all getting together to have some social fun, so sometimes it’s not the greatest to be very strict with the rules. I know oftentimes I encourage my opponents to take stuff back
- You want to make sure you have a conversation about this before the game starts. It might be great to play with some stricter rules enforcement if the folks you are playing with are up for it. (It also could EASILY be NOT fun to do so).
- Maybe hold yourself to a higher standard? Essentially owning your mistakes. You don’t have to always do this, but it’s hard to learn from a mistake if there are NO consequences from making it. (If you’ve ever played with me, you KNOW I don’t often hold myself to a higher standard!) I think this is something especially hard to do if you’ve only ever been a casual player. Playing a lot of limited, and grinding at PTQs etc, really helps here, because you are often playing at a higher REL, and take backs aren’t an option.

- Learning from your mistakes is CRITICAL to getting better at Commander. Two of your best tools for figuring out the mistakes you are making are “Thinking critically about games immediately after playing them” and “Talking with people who you respect, and getting their feedback”

- I’ve always loved the Hondens from Champions of Kamigawa.(2004)
- I was inspired by a patron Michael Borchik (@MBorchik) to build a Kenrith deck, specifically with a less than perfect mana base. I decided to go ahead and make it a 5-color enchantress deck, with all 5 of the Hondens in it.
- This solved a couple of problems the Kenrith deck had.

- I had to run too many tutors to reliably find the shrines
- Kenrith didn’t really interact well with the shrines
- Talk about how cool Sisay is, and how she does all the things a shrine deck would want.
- I sent email to myself to look at Sisay in the morning. Also, I included Kethis, Enduring Renewal, Estrid’s Invocation, Mirage Mirror, Sterling Grove, Privileged Position, Fountain Watch, Teshar (this was wrong, I was thinking of Shalai, and that’s also wrong) and Captain Sisay. Many of these didn’t make the final cut.

- Ryan - It started as a way to kind of keep a record for my kids (hence the #MtGDad moments every episode). Also, Magic is something I’m very passionate about.
- Why do we each create content?
- How much time do we each spend on the content we create each week?

- Zack - 2ish recording, 2ish editing (4-6 when it’s video), unknown on twitter, various amounts of time for graphic design, various amounts mailing things. 1-hour planning episode with Ryan, 1 hour if writing show notes
- Ryan - 2ish hours on the night we record, 1 hour planning the show (more if it involves building a deck). 1 hour proofing the show each week. 1 hour uploading the show. There are lots of other various time things as well.
- Creating content takes time
- The Magic community is pretty friggin awesome
- When you create content consistently with another person, you really develop a special bond
- You get to know a lot of really awesome people, both other content creators, and your listeners/viewers
- It’s really cool the first time you meet, or interact with someone who you’ve helped make their life better (even if it’s just in some small way)
- You get to learn...like a LOT. I’ve always been a lifelong learner, and there’s pretty much no end to the stuff you can learn. Audio, video, lighting, web design, how to use social media, technology, woodworking, you name it.
- What makes creating content worth it?
- Find a co-host(s) you have chemistry with, who you can trust, who are committed (unless of course you’re doing a 1-person show)
- Figure out the name. Seriously, take a LOT of time with this. We were almost “Commander Onramp”.(no we weren’t -z)
- Register the domain, look to see if there is anything else out there, past or present with the same/similar name
- Get accounts on all of the social media sites, Twitter, Instagram, Gmail account, patreon, Youtube, the sky is the limit here. Also, keep current with new social media things as they come about, and register those accounts.
- Figure out a schedule you can commit to and BE CONSISTENT
- we used LogoOrbit, and it can be pretty costly. There are cheaper alternatives out there, fiver, etc etc
- We placed our initial order for about $150 on April 29th, 2019. We Finished up with them on June 14th, and we must have gone back and forth like 50 times. We think it was worth the time and effort
- We were willing to spend the time and money on getting a good logo, because this wasn’t our first podcast and we knew we were going to be in it for the long haul.
- You can always rebrand later, but you definitely want a logo before you ever publish your first episode
- Get a logo
- Make your content available EVERYWHERE. We use libsyn to do this.
- PJ - Anything especially important with YouTube?
- It will take TIME before you get a regular set of listeners/viewers. Like even more time than you think (probably, I’m sure there are other stories out there about someone becoming an overnight success). Be patient,
- Be active on social media!
- It will take a while to get good. Creating content is like any other skill, Playing Guitar, Playing Magic, Sewing, whatever. I know I was SOOOO self-conscious in the beginning. I am, and probably always will be my harshest critic, but you can’t let that stop you if creating content is truly something you want to do.
- Not every episode will be great. Trust us! However, each episode is likely something you can learn from. If you do this, and constantly strive to get better, you WILL get better over time.

- “Second, it seems that the bigger card stores (f.i. SCG) have a small amount of available stock of popular cards left. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, people will have more logistical trouble selling their collections at LGS's but also at MagicFests and other venues. This could result in a lower supply of secondary market cards. The demand for popular cards could surpass the supply much faster than during normal circumstances. This causes the stock to dry up and prices to rise due to organic demand. Not because cards are in higher demand, but in lower supply. Do note that this is speculation on my part, based on what I see and hear on the socials.”

- Mono red is outside my comfort zone. I can brew it but I don't like playing it because it's not great at defense and I can't make plans with its card advantage.
- 5 color is also really tough unless I have a very specific idea in mind. Otherwise I get paralyzed by all the opportunity
- I struggle with playing blue. In particular the whole counterspell/draw go style. I feel bad countering someone's spell and even worse countering their commander, because I find it less enjoyable to play, I play it less which means I'm worse at it.

- I'm an Aggro/Midrange player and have always struggled with control. I taught myself how to play control and that helped me to understand how better to fight against control. That being said blue is the color that eludes me the most but I'm always trying to expand my prowess in commander. my main problem is I'm a very proactive player and blue intrinsically plays a reactive game

- After he left his comfort zone to play black - It took a second to get in a groove cause of what I’m typically drawn to, but once I got going, I really hit a groove. I kinda role played it. Since I’m a Dimir mage, I approached it as I was spying on everyone else to learn their secrets

- Austin was playing Gitrog
- Zack was playing a borrowed Prosh + Food Chain combo deck
- PJ was playing a Boros, Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero deck
- Ryan was playing Curious Control
- PJ won on turn 4 or 5 with Gerrard, Loyal Retainers, and Grinding Station
- I had no idea what was going on. Austin was very kind and offered me advice, but a control deck is pretty hard to pilot when you’re not sure what is going on, and what all is possible (Hard to know what to counter, for example)
- Game 1
- Zack was going to get a new pod going, and we were waiting for some players to finish, so Austin, PJ, and I decided to shuffle up for a 3 player cEDH game
- PJ ended up winning this one is similar fashion, although, I think I did bad things like cast a Fire Covenant at sorcery speed, and countered the wrong spells, and basically stifled Austin (playing Gitrog), and was essentially king maker

- Man, I am BAD at this format. I think a lot of this is unfamiliarity, and I’m sure that will come with time.
- It’s really interesting to play with all of these crazy combos/busted cards that I don’t normally play with, at least not in this density in my decks
- I feel like there is potentially more shuffling than in a normal game, because so much of the game is DEPENDANT on your starting hand. I think this is true because in a regular game of EDH, there is more time for you to play catchup, and often time folks will leave you alone if you’re mana screwed. That being said, being able to play a whole game in under half an hour is pretty sweet
- Fighting battles on the stack is pretty interesting, and not something we tend to see a whole lot of in our local meta
- I feel like I’m less able to express myself through Deck-building in cEDH, because I feel like many/most of the card choices for any given deck are necessary/required. Maybe my thoughts on this will change over time? I just know that many of the goofy/random type things I like to do in regular EDH are not viable in cEDH (example: Mr. OPC). That being said, I still think cEDH is pretty cool, and I want to get to know the format better.
- Playing cEDH was very disorienting the first time because I was playing a borrowed deck, but I still had fun!
- Ryan and I played tonight against each other and it was only slightly less disorienting than the last time, but it was a little easier knowing the deck and I still had fun.
- I think mulling correctly is important. I think you want to mull aggressively to get at least part of your combo or cards to get your combo.
- To play cEDH seriously I think you would have to study the meta of tiered cEDH decks to be able to combat them when playing yours and when playing EDH I’d rather be surprised at what people are playing vs seeing a commander and knowing it’s exact lines of play.
- I’m interested in casually playing cEDH when opportunities arise and I def see the appeal to it.

- We made sure that all 4 people knew exactly what we were signing up for, and I think that’s important.
- Also, I think most cEDH players genuinely DON’T want to pub stomp.
- Playing a crazy tuned cEDH deck versus non cEDH decks doesn’t seem like it would be much fun for the cEDH player
- We were playing socially, and having fun with folks during the games of cEDH that we played.

- Commander is many things, to many different people. cEDH is just one way to play this game, and it’s a valid way to play.
- EDH and cEDH are not mutually exclusive. PJ and Austin both had non-cEDH decks with them, and we had fun playing a few games of regular EDH before we dove into cEDH
- It’s really cool that there are so many different ways to play Magic, and even with Commander there are many ways to play. Magic is a great game, and everyone should be allowed to enjoy it the way they like

- Is fast mana one of the things that separates EDH from cEDH? We aren’t cEDH experts, but looking at the tier list here, it sees a lot of play in cEDH decks:
- Is this fair, given that nearly every EDH deck runs Sol Ring?
- Most of the cards on this list are more than $50, some as much as $200+

- If Mana Crypt were less expensive, would this argument still be happening?
- I’ve seen some folks on Twitter/Reddit complaining about their opponents using fast mana, oftentimes Mana Crypt is specifically called out.
- Does the way your deck is built change the amount of fast mana that is “appropriate”? If you’re playing Bird Tribal, is it OK to power up your deck with a little extra juice?

- Example: Ryan has a morph deck, and it’s pretty derpy. That deck runs a lot of fast mana, just so it can be on a similar playing field as a lot of other decks Ryan plays against in our meta

- I don’t think running fast mana is good or bad, it’s just a thing decks can do. We play fast mana sometimes. Feel free to look at our stables:
- Ryan has a Gonti Deck, and it runs mana vault, but maybe that should just be Dark Ritual?

- Ryan: I think that in general the effect is pretty similar, but again fast mana ramps you for the current turn, whereas Ramp cards make subsequent turns of yours better.
