  1. Thoughts on what we think might happen with C19

  • “Where I fell down was on the reprints. It wasn't up to the level of what many of you expected, and numerous cards you were hoping would be there weren't. I've heard this loud and clear, trust me on that one. I apologize for that, and would do it differently if I could do it again.”
  • “I want to specifically say that we've taken the community's concerns to heart when designing the Commander release for this year.”

  3. Ep 77 Community Spotlight:
  4. Main Topic - Review the PreCon decks

  • Bant -  Enchantment

  1. Played by Brandon and Elliot
    1. Elliot liked Tuvasa the Sunlit as the commander more than Estrid, the Masked
      1. Myth Unbound
      2. Ever-Watching Threshold
      3. Vow of Flight
      4. Vow of Wildness
      5. Unquestioned Authority
      6. Ravenous Slime
      7. Loyal Guardian
      8. Daxos of Meletis
    2. Cards that were cut:
    3. Deck needs more interaction (Removal, Bounce, Counterspells, etc)
      1. Sovereigns of Lost Alara
      2. Swords to Plowshares
      3. Seal of Primordium
      4. Heroic Intervention
      5. Detention Sphere
      6. Sun Titan
      7. Path to Exile
      8. Journey to Nowhere
      9. Eldrazi Conscription
      10. Trygon Predator
    4. Cards Added
      1. Gets to do HUGE swingy things
      2. Can make you a target early because the deck can deploy some giant threats fairly early.
        1. Whitewater Naiads
        2. Nylea’s Colossus
        3. Bruna, Light of Alabaster
        4. Sigil of the Empty Throne
      3. Has good comeback potential because it can kill a player out of nowhere:
    5. Thoughts about the deck in general
    6. Summary - The deck had a ton of synergy. Brandon said if he could have done things differently he would have #gotbigjon  harder. He also said as a former enchantress deck player he really enjoyed this deck.
  2. Eliot sent in some info

  • Esper - Top of the Library Matters

  1. Played by Ryan
    1. Felt like there weren’t very many early plays (Deck needed more “Defensive Speed” as they talk about on Limited Resources
    2. 17 3-drops in the deck feels somewhat bad when you want to cast your commander on Turn 3.
    3. Often times I would have Aminatou, the Fateshifter at 7,8,9 loyalty and just wouldn’t choose to use her “ultimate” (which is -6)
    4. Ramp is hard to come by in Esper, and I felt REALLY behind most games.
    5. I did like that the deck had a LOT of fliers in it
    6. The deck was really fun to play, but kinda hard to wrap my head around. It was very easy to make a mistake when doing all of that top of the library manipulation. I enjoyed the challenge of playing this deck.
    7. Most of the time this deck won by resolving Skull Storm on a freshly wrathed board, after casting my commander 3-4 times.
      1. Presence of the Master - I tried to play the “hate” game a bit
      2. Pithing Needle - A way to interact with Lord Windgrace (aka Wakanda)
      3. Merciless Eviction - Pretty good in a format where most people are playing Planeswalkers as Commanders
      4. Cleansing Nova - Was pretty good wrath, especially given the existence of the Bant decks
      5. Explorer’s Scope - Was every bit as good as I thought it would be (when I had a creature)
      6. Sensei’s Divining Top - Yep, it’s good.
      7. Withered Wretch - Hope to draw against Wakanda, and eat lands from the graveyard
    8. Notable Additions:
      1. Gonti, Lord of Luxury - Fun with Aminatou’s -1 Blink
      2. Chaos Wand
    9. Fun Additions:
    10. Summary - If you want the “Degree of Difficulty” challenge, this is the deck for you! Seriously, this was a very challenging deck to play, but also a whole lot of fun. Besides, casting Entreat the Angels and Entreat the Dead for their miracle costs was AWESOME!

  • Izzet - Artifact

  1. Played by Zack
    1. Felt like the deck could ramp up fast and generate a lot of mana.
    2. Didn’t always have an outlet for said mana
    3. Board wipes were devastating.
    4. Deck felt like it was full of good stuff, so cuts were hard to make.
  2. Thoughts
    1. Saheeli, the Gifted - Playing this card and seeing how other players interacted with a Planeswalker commander changed my opinion on such, which was low. I’m not certain if this was “in a vacuum” because everyone else was playing a pre-con, but want to test more in the wild.
    2. Treasure Nabber - Great fun! Enjoyed taking people’s sol rings and mana rocks to fix my own mana.
    3. Unwinding Clock - Prob my favorite card of the deck! Lots of mana and other shenanigans.
  3. Cards I Liked:
    1. Nevinryall’s Disk - Removal was hard. I was killed hard every time I played this.
    2. Omniscience -  Because it’s broken
    3. River’s Rebuke - Because Cyclonic Rift didn’t fit in the budget
    4. Risk Factor
    5. Aura Flux - Wrecked Brandon's face pretty hard.
  4. Notable Additions
    1. I had a lot of fun with this deck and want to continue to hone and play it.
    2. Deck felt like it had a lot of potentials and still does. Definitely worth the $35
    3. I plan on keeping this a reasonably budgeted deck to be able to work on creativity.
    4. *Wink* *Wink* *Nudge**Nudge* I thought it was cool Ultra-Pro put out matching deck boxes for the decks. Would totes be down if Ultra-Pro wanted to sponsor us!
  5. Summary -

  • Jund - Lands Matter

    1. Played by CJ, BigJon, and Vanessa
    2. The commander Lord Windgrace utilizes card draw + mana ramp
    3. Play style - Mid range agro/control
      1. The Gitrog Monster
      2. Abundance
      3. Multani, Yavimaya’s Avatar
      4. Mina and Denn, Wildborn
      5. Ramunap Excavator
      6. Constant Mists
      7. Final Parting
    4. Notable additions for the season
      1. Life from the loam
      2. Volrath’s Stronghold
      3. Journey to Eternity
      4. Oracle of Mul Daya
    5. Postseason additions
    6. Summary - The deck is powerful, versatile and it has “legs,” by which I mean that it doesn’t run out of gas very easily. For beginners, it’s also pretty easy to play.

    1. Disclaimer: This might be a somewhat touchy subject, our intent is not to pass judgment either way, but to simply discuss the matter.
      1. The Commander's Brew Podcast: Abz-Lands - 173
        1. http://www.commandersbrew.com/single-post/2018/11/20/Abz-Lands---173
    2. This episode was inspired by episode 173 of Commander’s Brew
      1. Copying a decklist, card-for-card (or very nearly), from some online resource.
    3. Let’s start with a definition of ‘Netdecking’
    4. Is there a difference when Netdecking for Standard vs Commander? (ie when Prizes are on the line?)
      1. What are some commonly heard complaints about Netdecking?
        1. Makes games the same, and leads to boring unimaginative gameplay. (Homogenization of the playfield)
        2. My brew can’t compete with your Net Deck.
        3. Netdecking is lazy
        4. Deck building is a fundamental aspect of MtG and if you’re not building your own decks your overall MtG skill must be low.
        5. Unimaginative
    5. Is Netdecking generally frowned upon?
    6. Should Netdecking be frowned upon? (ie does Netdecking deserve this Stigma?)
      1. Pro
        1. Saves time.
        2. Introduces you to cards you might not have known about.
        3. Gives you an opportunity to stretch yourself to understand new interactions you haven’t considered.
        4. Discovery
        1. In the beginning, you won’t know the deck as intimately.
      2. Con
    7. Pros and Cons of Netdecking

      3. DJ’s Youtube video deck tech
      4. Can playing a person’s deck bring you closer to them in the community? Maybe deeper discussions about a shared interest/commander?
    8. Positive experiences with Netdecking.
      1. Sub-topic: Our playgroup tends to not “overlap” on Commanders. It’s like the first person to build a deck (barring precons) “owns” that deck in our meta.
        1. Listeners: Is it like this in your meta?
    9. The idea of “owning” a deck. Specifically, this means, that a brewer owns their deck, whereas someone who Netdecked does not own their deck.
    10. What’s the difference between Netdecking and borrowing a friend’s deck?
    11. I think there is this idea of praising “brewers”
    12. Can netdecking help someone to become a better brewer over time?
  3. Main Topic - Netdecking

  • Is it bad if someone ALWAYS netdecks, and never ever brews?

      1. Big Jon HATES building / brewing decks.
    1. Yuriko Deck Tech, Muldrotha Deck Tech, have a LOT of views compared to our other videos.
    2. Does Netdecking lead to a “Homogeneous metagame”?
    3. Do you feel differently when you play a NetDeck versus a brew?
    4. Does NetDecking lead to “known” decks?
    5. Does NetDecking stifle creativity?
    6. If you feel pride in Brewing, should you feel shame in NetDecking?
    7. Some of the most fun I’ve had is playing precons (essentially NetDecks) out of the box

      3. CJ - Ravnica Allegiance only needs to offer up a few walls to make Arcades a Tier 1 Brawl Commander

      2. Travel and Budget
      1. Make travel plans early.
        1. If flying use a site like Kayak to set a price alert to get the best deal.
        1. Advantage - Saves money/Share costs
        2. Disadvantage - Less privacy/Close Quarters/May be on other people’s schedules
          1. Not always close to the event
            1. No Maid Service
              1. Seattle Concierge Service had Umbrellas to loan out.
              2. Great source of info on where to eat and what to see
            2. No Concierge Service
            3. No room safe
            4. No Shuttle Service to and From/Airport
            5. No in hotel restaurant/bar
          2. Less amenities than a Hotel
        3. Air BnB tends to be cheaper, but:
      2. Advantages/Disadvantages of splitting Hotel/Air BnB costs
        1. Most events have at least 3 types of registration
          1. Main Event (Tournament) (Usually these days you are not allowed to register for a main event the day of the tournament)
            1. Limited
              1. SCG Con has a Commander Package
              2. Special access to a Commander Only Area
              3. Comes with other Extras such as playmats/pins/ and deck box

            2. Infinite Challenge Packages - Unlimited entries into a specific Side Event (not as common now)
            3. Extras typically include special access to a VIP party or head of the line privileges
          3. VIP Package
            1. Free/Cheap Events at GPs and MtG Cons
              1. Casual play where space is available
                1. GP Vegas is especially known for the large number of casual players
              2. Meeting artist
              3. Window Shopping
              4. Art Shows
              5. Panels (There were a couple of cool panels at GP Vegas this year. One on cosplay and how to make costumes. Another cool one was “Who’s Turn is it Anyway?” an improv show) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_7k_MDRu_o
              6. Special Side events sponsored by Content Creators. (Commanderin Cosplay Events)
                1. Play a game with your favorite MtG Celebrity
                2. Lines can be long for favorite Personalities
              7. Spellslinger Events
          4. You DO NOT have to buy any registration to enter and have fun at MtG event
      3. Pre-register for the events you want
    2. Preparing to Attend a GP/MtG event
      1. If flying:
        1. Pack cards and collection separate from luggage/clothing
        2. Do not check card collection.
          1. This may not be true for extremely budget airline ticket.
        3. You are typically allowed 1 carry on item and 1 personal item such as a backpack as long as it fits under the seat.
          1. What luggage are you allowed?
          2. Are there additional fees?
          3. What happens if you miss your flight?
            1. No moving seats
            2. No rebooking if you miss a flight if it is your fault
            3. First one to be forced off the flight if the flight is full
          4. Basic Economy tickets are very restricted.
        4. Read and Understand the terms of your ticket.
        5. Recommend getting the airlines Economy/Business Economy tickets (1 step above Basic Economy)
          1. For smaller regional airports, be there 2 hours a before the flight
          2. Large international hubs such as ATL or LAX, be there 3 hours before your departure
          3. REMEMBER: If your ticket says the plane leaves at 08:30, that means the doors close at 08:20. Once the doors on a plane are closed, you are not getting onto a plane.
          4. Expect to be delayed in at security due to your card collection. (This has happened to me just about every time! Mention JLK’s hilarious tweet: https://twitter.com/JoshLeeKwai/status/1053334228539064321 )
        6. SHOW UP TO THE AIRPORT EARLY
        1. Going a long distance driving?
          1. Share the driving with a friend
          2. Plan for stops
            1. FuelLog
            2. Triptik
          3. Budget for gas (apps can help plan this)
            1. Waze
            2. Mapquest
          4. Plan for Traffic (apps can help with this)
      2. If Driving:
        1. Try to limit yourself to one personal item filled with MtG cards/decks
          1. It is easier to maintain physical security of your collection if it is easy to handle and store.
          2. Ryan - I try to REALLY challenge myself to only bring the top 5 Commander decks I’m interested in playing for the weeknd (and maybe also a brawl deck or two). Also, a good idea to bring different decks of varying power level, cause you don’t know who you will play against all weekend
      3. Do NOT overpack
    3. Travelling
      1. Be Friendly and Open to New Experiences
        1. No one owes you their time
        2. Everyone’s else may have different ideas of what is fun
        1. Be aware of your surroundings
        2. Do not leave your stuff unattended
        3. Hook your backpack/travel bag to a chair leg or to you
        4. Make sure zippers are not easily opened
          1. If you have a large and/or expensive collection you can get insurance for it
          2. It is a special rider that is added to your homeowners or renters insurance.
          3. It is cheap
          4. For extremely price items, insurance companies will want physical proof such as receipt of purchase or a picture of the item.
          5. Keeping a digital copy of your decks/collection online can help you during a claim.
            1. A police report is required to file an insurance claim
            2. Inform the event organizers, let them know if there are any unique items that may identify the collection
          6. If you are unfortunate and your collection is stolen at an event, immediately file a police report
        5. GET INSURANCE!
          1. Especially if you are in the Main Event
          2. On site food is typically overpriced and not the greatest quality.
        6. Bring Snacks and Water
          1. Ask random people to play with you
          2. Make a sign advertising
          3. Post to twitter with a picture of the table number you are at and the Hashtag for the event, e.g. #GPVegas
            1. Once started a game with someone’s casual deck - turned out to be a crazy Thassa combo deck that got Omniscience out on turn 4.
            2. Don’t get mad - be polite
            3. Find a group that you enjoy
            4. Make new friends
          4. Not all decks are made the same
        7. If you are just there to play Casual Commander
          1. Visit your favorite artist
            1. Card signing are typically $1 -$2 per signature
              1. Make sure to UNSLEEVE your cards while you are standing in line. Don’t be that person making everyone wait while you are unsleeving double-sleeved cards
            2. Be prepared with what you want. You are not the only person in line.
            3. Most artist love discussing their artwork, but be respectful of their time, especially if they are busy.
            1. It’s really cool to meet and have conversations with MtG Celebrities. Most of the ones I have met are super happy to sign a playmat, and you’ll come out with an amazing, one-of-a-kind souvenir
            2. It’s good to have a few different color of sharpies available
            3. Also, a playmat with a bright color background, makes sure signatures show up really well. (For example, the first playmat I made with the BW logo was on a black background, which just didn’t work out all that well).
            4. Blank playmats are often available at the tournament site
          2. Bring a playmat and some sharpies!
            1. Panels include everything from format specific discussions, comedy sketches, to instructional how to’s.
          3. Attend a Panel
            1. Most events are held in large cities
            2. Visit and experience the local sites
            3. Some really great after-hours experiences can be had, not limited to a great dinner out with some cool podcast hosts :-P
          4. Get out of the Convention Hall
        8. Events are more than Game Play
      2. Maintain your Personal and Physical Security
    4. Attending an Event
      1. Be prepared
      2. Manage Expectations
      3. Have Fun

  3. Ep 73 Community Spotlight:
    1. Who is Sheldon Menery and why does he matter?
      1. Retired Level 5 Judge
      2. Pioneered the creation of Commander (EDH at the time)
      3. Member of the Commander Rules Committee (http://mtgcommander.net)
      1. Commander is designed to promote social games of magic. [The] vision is predicated on a social contract: a gentleman's agreement which goes beyond these rules to include a degree of interactivity between players. Players should aim to interact both during the game and before it begins, discussing with other players what they expect/want from the game.
        1. http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php
    2. What is the social contract?
  4. Main Topic - The Social Contract

  • Simply put, the social contract is about talking to each other, about figuring out how you want to approach the format (and not lying about it. Saying "I'm super-casual" and then "Ha, ha, Turn 3 Hermit Druid/kill you" is a clear violation of the spirit).

      1. “We want players to think about not only their own enjoyment but the enjoyment of the people they'll be playing with.”
      1. Disclaimer: These are our opinions. If you want to read Sheldon’s Opinions check out his article on Star City. There is a link in the show notes to the article.

        1. especially when you have someone like me who's going to take way too much time to decide what to pick because I'm trying to think through the possibilities, getting confused, and starting over again” made me think of CJ
      13. Thieves' Auction
        1. in Commander, the way you win is nearly as important as the winning itself.” I love this quote. Also, I hate this card.
      14. Wound Reflection
        1. :(
      15. Bonus: Derevi, Empyrial Tactician
    1. Cards that shouldn’t be played in the format according to Sheldon

            10. Painful Quandary
      3. Ryan (I only get 1?)
    2. Cards we personally don’t enjoy in EDH
    1. The common thread here is that these cards can be unfun, and can cause the pace of the game to stagnate

    1. Disclaimer: By the time you hear this, these events will already be over
    2. Here’s the link: https://magic.wizards.com/en/mtgarena/watch
    3. Talk about HOW COOL this is! Engaging the community like this is so cool!
      1. 100 gems or 500 gold
      2. 60 card constructed with zero instant-speed spells in it (including flash!)
      3. I played my modified Golgari Precon. 4-2. Lost to mono black discard and mirror match ( Golgari Mirror ).
      4. Maybe talk about the Arena code that comes with pre-cons now.
      5. Made a B/W Vamps deck with lots of enchantments and sorcery speed removal (went 2-2. Lost to a mono black discard deck, and a G/R giant Dinos deck)
    4. Day[9]’s Insta-Ban
      1. 750 gems or 5000 gold
      2. Draft 3 packs of Dominaria, everyone can play two lands per turn, start with 9 cards in hand, no maximum hand size
        1. Jhoira
        2. Weatherlight
        3. Daring Archaeologist
      3. Drafted a sweet Jeskai Deck with Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain, and a strong historic /mill theme (got to 5 wins)
      4. Did not have enough gold
    5. Gaby’s Greedy Dominaria Draft
      1. Upcoming Creators: (Any guesses as to what they might do?)
        1. Brian Kibler (@bmkibler) - creatures get +2/+2 trample and lifelink
        2. Kripparian (@Kripparrian) - Diablo 3 aside (maybe) depending on time
        3. Thundermo_Hellkite (@Thundermo_HK)
        4. ProfessorNox (@coL_noxious)
        5. AmyZonian (@TheAmyzonian)
    6. New Creator events every month.
      1. BW Podcast
        1. Singleton, obvs! But what else?
        2. Maybe at the start of the game you get to tutor for any creature card in your deck, and start with it in your hand? Good idea since we are Commander oriented.
        3. Higher life total?
      2. Everything has Hexproof!
      3. Zack would only allow cards to be played that have 10 or less words on them.
      4. Tribal wars, each deck would need like 20 creatures of a shared type
    7. What would a Brothers’ War Podcast Event look like? Maybe what we would do individually?
      1. Actual Tournaments, kinda like the MTGO MOCS (Magic online championship series)
      2. Soapbox / beating a dead horse: Brawl
      3. Leagues
    8. What are some other fun things they could do?

    6. @tappedout - 00:32:08
  2. Ep 62 Community Spotlight:
    1. Session one in the books. Big Jon is in the lead, with a whopping 10 points this first session. The most anyone got in the previous season was 8 points in a session. Kudos to you Big Jon!
    2. Ryan tells a story about being greedy
  3. League Update:
    1. Definition: Found decks are like “Found Art” or “Found Object”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_object
    2. Disclaimer: The power level of a found deck probably depends a lot on the size of your collection. However, this can be a fun challenge to build a Commander or even Brawl deck from your draft leftovers.
      1. Ryan:
        1. Basically try and get inspired by a new Legendary creature
          1. Command Zone Episode 227 (or 224). Here is the link: http://commandzone.collected.company/82940b68
        2. Another way I get inspired is by a deck I’ve played against.
        1. Don’t organize collection
      2. CJ:
        1. Think of a theme or see a card I like
      3. Zack:
    3. How do you go about starting a found deck?
      1. Zack: good stuff boxes
        1. Look through all the good stuff boxes and some random (not good stuff) boxes pulling cards that are interesting
      2. CJ: Dig dig dig!
        1. Not the way I normally build a deck, and that’s why I find the concept of “Found Decks” interesting
      3. Ryan: I have something I call “The cache”: Stanley 10 compartment box: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stanley-10-Compartment-Deep-Pro-Small-Parts-Organizer-014710R/100375900?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal2_rr-_-203707065-_-100375900-_-N
    4. How to build the deck
      1. Ryan tests by playing games with friends (oftentimes after a league session)
      2. CJ does LOTS of goldfishing
      3. Zack doesn’t
    5. Testing

  2. Ep 61 Community Spotlight:
    1. Ryan won season 4. Top 5 standings:
      1. 33 - Ryan
      2. 24 - Vanessa
      3. 22 - Elliot
      4. 20 - Peter
      5. 17 - CJ
      6. … Zack had 10 points and came in 9th
  3. League Update:
    1. Commander 2018 Decklists
    2. Subjective Reality - Played by Ryan
    3. Exquisite Invention - Played by Zack
    4. Adaptive Enchantment - Played by Elliot
    5. Nature’s Vengeance - Played by Isaac
      1. Game 1 - Elliot pulled off Genesis Storm for like 6, and hit Whitewater Naiads while already having Nylea’s Colossus in play
        1. Ryan cast Sower of Discord and named Ryan and Elliot. Elliot had previously cast Martial Coup for 7
        2. Zack liked Blinkmoth Urn but it was killed by Akroma’s Vengeance both games
        3. Bosh, Iron Golem was played
        1. Ryan cast Akroma’s Vengeance and killed all of Zack’s artifacts.
        2. Ryan got to cast Aminatou’s Augury, and it was OK, but didn’t win him the game, which you kinda want 8 mana sorceries to do.
        3. Ryan got to cast Entreat the Dead for it’s Miracle cost, and bring back 4 Creatures, and it was good!
        4. Zack got obsessed with Retrofitter Foundry + Tawnos, Urza’s Apprentice
      2. Game 2. Ryan durdled his way to a win.
    6. Games
      1. Was a really fun experience! And I recommend listeners give it a try if they have a chance. Bonus: Listeners, if you did play all 4 decks against each other, give us a tweet, and let us know what you thought.
    7. All 4 Decks playing against each other.
