  5. Ep 107 Community Spotlight:
    1. Disclaimer: I’m sure this idea isn’t a brand new one, but we do think it could be a useful tool to folks out there.
    2. Disclaimer 2: I don’t do this for every deck I built, but it’s most of them.
      1. Do you always find yourself cutting the same card over and over again, right at the end of deck-brewing? Flex spots could be the answer you're looking for
      2. In every deck tech we do you might have noticed we include a slot called the flex spot.
      3. Having a healthy amount of cards reserved for flex spots, is a good way to ensure you’re not hyper-tuning your deck. This can lead to a lower overall power level. Some folks out there have a hard time not over-tuning (nice place to plug Lenny’s Power Sink series on edhrec: https://edhrec.com/articles/author/lenny-wooley/)
      4. This idea is potentially more useful to folks that brew decks often, and don’t necessarily keep all their decks up-to-date when new cards are released (guilty!). However, I do see some merit to people who have like 3-5 decks that they frequently update. Maybe say earmark 5 cards as like “sandbox play area”. Heck, you could even do this with a star sticker on the inner sleeve
      5. If you use Flex spots in this way, you also greatly increase the chance of a deck feeling more “like you”
        1. Cards that you simply want to play that maybe aren’t synergistic with the deck.
        2. New cards you want to test out and see how good they are.
        3. Pet cards
        4. Extra removal ;-)
        5. Fun cards
        6. Spice!
      6. There are lots of different cards you can include in a flex spot
        1. Zack Examples
          1.  In Roger and Arden I run Grafted Exoskeleton, it is an equipment, so it fits the deck in that way, but It’s also infect which IMO is just fun.
          2.  I don’t know if Vorpal Sword is good in Yawgmoth, but I want to put it in a flex spot to find out!
          1. Chatterfang
            1. Journey to Eternity
            1. Explosion of Riches
            2. Bladegriff Prototype
            3. Diaochan, Artful Beauty
          2. Zurzoth, Chaos Rider
            1. Chef’s Kiss
            2. Embercleave
          3. Delina, Wild Mage
        2. Ryan Examples

  5. Ep 106 Community Spotlight:
    1. Disclaimer: This is still very much a work in progress!
      1. It’s called Classmander because you start with one of the 12 class cards in the Command zone:
        1. https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=type%3Aclass
          1. Zack and Ryan discuss which class they would start with, and maybe look into what starting creature they would pick
            1. Zack - Warlock Class
              1. Cabal Initiate
              2. Leech Fanatic
              3. Promising Duskmage
              1. Ranger
                1. Norwood Ranger
                2. Orochi Ranger
            2. Ryan - Bard/Ranger/Rogue are tempting
        2. I think we can have the same kind of tax on your class card, as you have on a normal Commander
        3. The plan is also to start with a vanilla-ish creature in the Command zone, preferably of the same creature type as your class (Currently no Fighter or Sorcerer)
          1. It might be cool to let characters multi-class after a certain level, plus this would allow for decks to be 3 or more colors.
        4. By the end of the campaign (or maybe multiple campaigns) have a legendary creature, a class, and a 100 card singleton deck, hence the name Classmander.
    2. The idea: Play many games of Classmander over a long period of time, similar to a D&D campaign length. Basically a TTRPG but instead of dice rolling to resolve combat, you play games of Magic.
      1. We have 3 spreadsheets so far (see, it’s serious!)
        1. Monster Manual
          1. This is the least fleshed out bit so far.
            1. You could also have a higher-level skeleton deck that runs cards like Skeletal Swarming and Death Baron
          2. The idea for this is to create “encounter decks”, so for example you could have a skeleton deck with regenerating creatures, that the players will have to team up to get out of the way, because regenerating taps the creature
          1. This is a spreadsheet with a tab for each class. I went through the exercise of creating the starting level 1 Cleric deck (I have added cards to some of the other Classes, but very few).
            1. Cleric
              1. Classmanders: Kitsune Diviner, Keepers of the faith, Samite Healer
                1. The idea is for the deck to be as “bad” as possible at the start. The lower you start, the more you have to gain, and that’s going to be the fun part of this game, Character progression!
                1. Avacyn's Collar
                2. Healer's Headdress
                3. Potion of Healing
                4. Shield of the Realm
                5. True-Faith Censer (see the flavor coming through!!!!)
              2. Class Specific Cards
                1. Fifty Feet of Rope
                2. Adventuring Gear
                3. Blazing Torch
                4. Explorer's Scope
                5. Dungeon Map
              3. Cards that could go in ANY starting deck
              1. Paladin's Shield
              2. Sigil of Valor
            2. Paladin
              1. Sorcerer’s Wand
            3. Sorcerer
              1. Blinding Powder
              2. Thieve’s Tools
            4. Rogue
        2. Class Guide
          1. Rules Tab
            1. Place to put all the general stuff
            1. The idea here is that you can put any sort of equipment or artifact or book. You know, flavorful stuff like Bag of Holding. Basically people playing in pods/campaigns will ask to have certain cards they want to add to their decks added to the item list
          2. Items Tab
            1. Same idea as the items tab, but with creatures you want to add to your deck. Might start off with a base price for common, and then more for an uncommon, and more for rare, and more still for mythic Rare. Maybe legendary creatures cost a bunch? Still playing with this idea
          3. Hirelings
            1. The idea here is that we can have a Drizzt deck, or a Minsc deck. Some adventurer that can show up and either help the players, or be an obstacle.
          4. NPCs
            1. This is going to be a template, like the kind you print out for D&D characters, it’s still pretty rough currently.
          5. Character Sheet
            1. There isn’t much here, but the idea is that by level 20, which should be max level, you will have:
              1. Starting life total of 40 (maybe we can let this go lower/higher based on class?)
              2. 7 Starting hand size
              3. A cool legendary creature at the helm of your deck
              4. Lots of sweet cards in your deck. We can even have some cards gifted to each character upon level up
          6. Level Up Guide
        3. Classmander Core Rulebook
    3. Let’s flesh out the details a bit more
      1. We do not have a campaign created, but would be cool if we eventually get there.
      2. In the meantime, it might be fun to get a party together, and just play a few rounds against some of the encounter decks, and see what leveling up could look like
        1. The idea here is that all good adventurers take the time to keep their skills sharp, so why not have a sparring match (Montage!) against 3 other players of similar level? Good way to gain experience, and maybe gold.
      3. We’re gonna need a montage!
    4. How do you get experience?
      1. The plan is to let Patrons contribute to the spreadsheets. Ideally, a single patron could take on the challenge of creating the level 1 deck for a particular class.
      2. Also, we plan to add a Slack channel, so that people can share ideas. Say, like Zane wants to make the Sorcerer deck, but maybe Andy Bentley has some ideas to share,
    5. Do you want to get involved?
      1. What do you think of this idea? Is this something you’d be interested in participating in? If so, hit us up on Patreon.com/commandersocial. Was this a fun/entertaining episode? Please let us know.

      1. Decklist is here: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RWbvf2Nxm06S7Q9erIlNTg
    2. Deck genesis: Zack mentioned this card should be in my top 8 list, and it really should have! Not sure how I missed this. It’s kinda hard for me to say no to making a mono-red deck, and if you recall I talked about how Sword of Hearth and Home can do blink stuff in non-traditional colors. This lead me to see how mono-red Blink can work, and I think it can work pretty well!

      8. Ancient Tomb ($45)
    8. Some Cards that could easily be removed to reduce budget, that aren’t integral to the way the deck functions.
