  2. Ep 93 Community Spotlight:

        3. Ben playing Rona. Disciple of Gix
        4. Alden playing Meren of Clan Nel Toth
        5. Zack did something SILLY this game (wrathing with 22 creatures in play while Ryan had Revel in Riches
        6. Ryan ended up winning after doing some Erratic Portal shenanigans with Gonti and Panharmonicon, then using Alden’s Overwhelming Stampede and Eldrazi Monument for the win
        1. Zack playing Niv-Mizzet Parun
        2. Ryan playing Mr. OPC Grenzo
        3. Ben playing Jodah
        4. Alden playing Edgar Markov
        5. Ryan ended up winning when Alden had a crazy Damnable Pact on the stack by sacking a bunch of goblins to Siege Gang Commander and Goblin Sharpshooter
      2. Game 2
        1. Zack playing Saheeli
        2. Ryan playing Alden’s Edgar Markov deck
        3. Ben playing Jodah
        4. Alden playing Lord Windgrace
        5. Ben ended up winning this game with a hefty amount of planeswalkers, including Ultimating Ral, Izzet Viceroy
      3. Game 3
    3. We played 3 games
  3. LGS Fun!
    1. A lot of new players have trouble knowing how to make their decks better.
      1. How often are you playing the deck?
      2. How often do you find yourself with dead cards in hand?
    2. How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your decks?
      1. Decide if you’re completely scrapping the deck, or just adding a few cards
      2. Is there a new Commander that you want to helm the deck? That’s closer to an overhaul
    3. Decide what your Goal is going to be: entire deck overhaul vs. small upgrade
      1. Maybe you save up for big upgrade, but there are plenty of good cards that are cheap AND good!
      2. Trade in old cards that you may not want anymore. A lot of stores give you a bonus if you take store credit over cash.
    4. Updating your deck doesn’t have to cost a TON of money.
      1. Give the deck several plays with the new cards before you decide if you like them or not.
      2. Ask playgroup if you can start a game with a couple of new cards in your opening hand.
      3. Ryan -  I keep the last 20 or so cards originally cut from the deck, WITH the deck, so that I can always try out something new, when I find something that isn’t working.
    5. Play it
      1. Focus on where you deck is weak. Do this by asking yourself some questions
        1. What decks have been problematic / have I been losing to?
          1. How have those decks been winning?
          1. Mana troubles?
          2. Never having enough cards in hand?
          3. Losing to problematic Artifacts/Enchantments?
        2. How has my deck been losing?
        3. Do you often find yourself with a bunch of high casting cost cards in your hand. Maybe it’s time to lower your curve
        4. Are there times when your deck isn’t doing what it’s supposed to - why is that?
        1. If built with slot theory and deck is doing okay - swap slot for slot (Ie. Removal for Removal)
        2. If you switch cards 1 for 1 from slots write down what you swapped and when you draw new card think if you’d rather have new card or old card.
        3. If you’re getting decimated - reevaluate which slots you have, and how many cards you assign to each slot type
      2. Slot Theory
      3. When a new set comes out if you see a card you like add a note in your phone.
        1. EDHRec new cards feature
        2. YouTube Videos
        3. Podcasts
        4. Scryfall - look for similar cards
        5. Lastly...your friends! - Consult friends and playgroup for advice. All of us Magic players LOVE talking about Magic
      4. What are some resources for inspiration on upgrading your deck.
        1. Counter magic heavy?
        2. Combo heavy?
        3. Infect?
        4. Token based decks
      5. Consider your meta
    6. How can you maximize upgrading your deck?
      1. Changing the way your deck functions by removing too many cards that make your deck an <X> deck (tokens, discard, control,
      2. Sometimes upgrading a deck turns into me brewing a new deck.
    7. Potential Pitfalls
      1. I consider this one of the first successful EDH decks I’ve ever built
        1. It was originally a budget brew for Season Two of the EDH League.
        2. I’ve put a few new cards into the deck, but I’m starting to see cards that feel not great when I draw them.
        1. Lands - 38
        2. Creatures - 23
        3. Instants - 9
        4. Sorceries - 9
        5. Enchantments - 10
        6. Artifacts - 11
      2. Deck Stats
        1. Exquisite Blood
        2. Ethereal Absolution
        3. Approach of the Second Sun
        4. Hour of Revelation
        5. Kaya's Wrath (We’ll talk about why this is not so great)
        6. Fumigate
      3. Cards I want to add
    8. Upgrading Zack’s Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim

  2. Ep 90 Community Spotlight:
    1. Played with PJ and Lin.
      1. PJ’s channel on YouTube is “Commander Replay” - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrudMyVbtvyVyadYddhousA
    2. Actually won a game with MR. OPC Grenzo.
    3. Was a really fun moment when I thought I was going to win with Yuriko, by flipping Draco off the top of my library, and PJ unequipped Sunforger to get Teferi’s Protection, and Lin also cast Teferi’s Protection. Man that card is good!
  3. Games at our LGS
    1. Modern Horizons
      1. Explain what Modern Horizons is: A set direct to modern with brand new cards and reprints (that are not currently legal)
        1. Sweet intro video with Cassius Marsh, and Matt Nass

            2. Serra the Benevolent
          2. Two cards from that video
        2. Modern Horizons is probably going to be PRETTY sweet for Commander players
          1. Ryan
            1. Expropriate
            2. Riptide Laboratory
            3. Council’s Judgement
            1. Thought Vessel
            2. Teferi’s Protection
            3. Cabal Coffers
          2. Zack
        3. What are some awesome Reprints that could be included in MH, that we each want to see?
        4. Would be really cool to see some sweet new legendary creatures in Modern Horizons
      1. HYPE! This set is SO CRAZY!!!!!
        1. Planeswalkers are one of the coolest card types in the game!
      2. Teaser video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn_0ZjpjntE
        1. Link to a reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/ayufiu/all_36_war_planeswalkers_in_one_image_with_names/
        2. Notable PW NOT making an appearance:
      3. Stained glass article here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/closer-look-stained-glass-planeswalkers-2019-03-08
        1. People have been speculating Planeswalkers will universally be allowed to be commanders.
        2. Depending on how good all the PWs are, we could see a lot of super friends decks showing up, especially in Brawl!
        3. That being said, I think WotC will be trying to get planeswalkers out in color combinations not already represented by commanders in Brawl
      4. So what does all of this mean for EDH?
        1. Ryan
          1. Jaya
          2. Chandra
          3. Sorrin Markov
          1. Jace.. duh
          2. Saheeli
          3. Davriel Cane (Skeletor)
          4. Bonus: Ugin
        2. Zack
      5. What Planeswalkers are we most excited to see?
        1. Probably some common/uncommon PW, at the very least rare
        2. Every Pre-release kit has a FOIL stamped PW AND another foil stamped card
        3. Maybe some PW with no Ultimates, or maybe only minuses or only pluses
      6. A Planeswalker in every pack. What do we think this means?
    2. War of the Spark
    3. Summary - We are beyond hyped for both of these products.
    4. And, as if the hype weren’t enough, we got a FREE preview card from WAR, given to us by Wizards of the Coast! If you want to make sure you get to see the preview card as soon as we can show you, the Subscribe button is waiting :)

The Talk - Ep 89

  1. Thanks
    1. Mike Condon for the music and editing
    2. Tiffany for the logo/icon
    1. @MothershipGames - 09:15, 26:28, 44:05
    2. @commandcast - 32:27
    3. @edhrec - 34:51
    4. @JoshLeeKwai - 36:07
    5. @dpkrausejr - 37:28
  2. Ep 89 Community Spotlight:

  • Main Topic - The Talk (The Decks and the Dice)
  • Why have the talk?

  1. To make sure everyone is on the same page regarding what kind of game is being played.
  2. To ensure everyone has fun. I think if you ask most people, they would say they have a better time playing Magic when the games are close/even
  3. Anecdotes about the talk.
    1. What do you think the power level of your deck is from 1-10?
    2. Are you running combos?
    3. How fast do you usually win? How many turns do your games usually last?
    4. Are you playing mass land destruction
  4. Questions you can ask:
    1. People will also see you as someone who strives to play balanced/Fun games.
  5. The more you have the talk, the easier it will be to bring up in the future.

  • Why might it be hard to have the talk

  1. Anxiety
  2. New people

  • Pubstomping

  1. Definition: When an organized team of friends/clan members plays against a team of "pubs" - random people who join a public server.
  2. Does this happen? Probably, but not nearly as much as one might think.
  3. I think sometimes CEDH players can get a bad wrap in this regard. I don’t think there are CEDH Boogey men out there, trolling events, trying to ruin folks days.
  4. We should all remember: “Magic is a game for everyone”, there are all kinds of ways to play and just because one playstyle doesn’t fit you, doesn’t invalidate it or mean others don’t enjoy Magic in that way.

  • Evaluating your decks

  1. On average most people I’ve played say their decks are between six and seven on the power scale.
    1. This happens because there really is not standardized scale by which to measure your deck. This is a very hard problem to solve, because there are so many nuances in the power level of a deck
    2. I don’t think people are intentionally dishonest about the power of their decks.
    3. Maybe in their playgroup their deck does amazing and they think it’s higher
    4. Perhaps it is the opposite and they do not as well in their playgroup despite their deck being very powerful. Maybe because the rest of their playgroup has super ultra mega powerful decks
      1. Ryan - Grenzo, 6-6.5
        1. Deck link: https://www.topdecked.me/decks/9b3fdf2b-82ca-4f6a-b859-9e7feae1e5ef
        2. Has a theme, but plays some cards that are kinda bad, like Dark-Dweller Oracle
        3. Has some powerful cards, like Mindslaver, but no way to recur it.
        4. Also has Gauntlet of Might, which can get out of hand pretty quickly
        5. Also, playing cards like Indomitable Creativity, which has high variance
        6. But can also just draw Insurrection and win a game
        1. Deck link: https://www.topdecked.me/decks/d5fbf9d2-2a66-4d44-afc2-904954f16ea5
      2. Zack - Saheeli 7.5 - 8
    5. Ryan and Zack talk about how they would rate their decks
  2. I’ve often found not all decks people play feel as powerful as they say, sometimes they are lower or higher.

  • How to prepare for playing with people you don’t know at your LGS or big event

      1. Bring decks of varying power levels.
        1. Often times I let the other players know about 3-4 decks I have with me, and I see if they are interested in playing against any of them.
      2. Be prepared to have the talk. I’d even go so far as to say that YOU dear viewer should try and initiate the talk.
        1. Ryan will initiate the talk
        2. Zack will introduce himself
        3. Ryan asks Zack questions (Zack is playing Muldrotha) Ryan will eventually suggest he plays his Gonti deck
      3. (Ryan and Zack roleplay a talk)
      1. Trying to make an inviting event that caters to newer/more casual players is GOOD for our format. It will bring new players to our community, and that is a win for everyone.
    1. Mothership Games, our LGS, now has a two days set aside for EDH one more competitive / combo and one for newer more casual players
    2. Summary. We all want to play GOOD games of Magic. Even though it may be a little outside your comfort zone, having the talk can lead to a better overall experience, and even opens up lines of communication after the game, to discuss how it went. The more we all take measures such as having the talk, the better the game gets for everyone involved, it’s a win-win.

    1. Slot Theory
      1. General discussion about how decks can only have so many slots
      2. If your deck was 39 land and the rest Opt, it would be very bad
      3. Modal cards are awesome, because they essentially “increase” the number of slots in your deck
      4. Lands with spell-type effects, such as Academy Ruins, also basically increase the number of slots in your deck
      5. If you set up a “Slot Table” for your deck, you can make sure that you have enough of the types of effects that you want in your deck
      1. Deck Statement: Mr. OPC! (aka Mono-Red Other People’s Cardboard)
      2. I came up with the Slot Table for this deck, before I selected any cards to go in it. I have no idea if the numbers I have picked for each slot are correct, but I’ll refine that after playing with the deck more
      3. Number in Parenthesis was at the start, number after is how many ended up in the deck

              3. Window Shopping
              4. Art Shows
              5. Panels (There were a couple of cool panels at GP Vegas this year. One on cosplay and how to make costumes. Another cool one was “Who’s Turn is it Anyway?” an improv show) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_7k_MDRu_o

              7. Spellslinger Events
          4. You DO NOT have to buy any registration to enter and have fun at MtG event
      3. Pre-register for the events you want
    2. Preparing to Attend a GP/MtG event
      1. If flying:
        1. Pack cards and collection separate from luggage/clothing
        2. Do not check card collection.
          1. This may not be true for extremely budget airline ticket.
        3. You are typically allowed 1 carry on item and 1 personal item such as a backpack as long as it fits under the seat.
          1. What luggage are you allowed?
          2. Are there additional fees?
          3. What happens if you miss your flight?
            1. No moving seats
            2. No rebooking if you miss a flight if it is your fault
            3. First one to be forced off the flight if the flight is full
          4. Basic Economy tickets are very restricted.
        4. Read and Understand the terms of your ticket.
        5. Recommend getting the airlines Economy/Business Economy tickets (1 step above Basic Economy)
          1. For smaller regional airports, be there 2 hours a before the flight
          2. Large international hubs such as ATL or LAX, be there 3 hours before your departure
          3. REMEMBER: If your ticket says the plane leaves at 08:30, that means the doors close at 08:20. Once the doors on a plane are closed, you are not getting onto a plane.
          4. Expect to be delayed in at security due to your card collection. (This has happened to me just about every time! Mention JLK’s hilarious tweet: https://twitter.com/JoshLeeKwai/status/1053334228539064321 )
        6. SHOW UP TO THE AIRPORT EARLY
        1. Going a long distance driving?
          1. Share the driving with a friend

            2. Triptik
          3. Budget for gas (apps can help plan this)
            1. Waze
            2. Mapquest
          4. Plan for Traffic (apps can help with this)
      2. If Driving:
        1. Try to limit yourself to one personal item filled with MtG cards/decks
          1. It is easier to maintain physical security of your collection if it is easy to handle and store.
          2. Ryan - I try to REALLY challenge myself to only bring the top 5 Commander decks I’m interested in playing for the weeknd (and maybe also a brawl deck or two). Also, a good idea to bring different decks of varying power level, cause you don’t know who you will play against all weekend
      3. Do NOT overpack
    3. Travelling
      1. Be Friendly and Open to New Experiences
        1. No one owes you their time
        2. Everyone’s else may have different ideas of what is fun
        1. Be aware of your surroundings
        2. Do not leave your stuff unattended
        3. Hook your backpack/travel bag to a chair leg or to you
        4. Make sure zippers are not easily opened
          1. If you have a large and/or expensive collection you can get insurance for it
          2. It is a special rider that is added to your homeowners or renters insurance.
          3. It is cheap
          4. For extremely price items, insurance companies will want physical proof such as receipt of purchase or a picture of the item.
          5. Keeping a digital copy of your decks/collection online can help you during a claim.
            1. A police report is required to file an insurance claim
            2. Inform the event organizers, let them know if there are any unique items that may identify the collection
          6. If you are unfortunate and your collection is stolen at an event, immediately file a police report
        5. GET INSURANCE!
          1. Especially if you are in the Main Event
          2. On site food is typically overpriced and not the greatest quality.
        6. Bring Snacks and Water
          1. Ask random people to play with you
          2. Make a sign advertising
          3. Post to twitter with a picture of the table number you are at and the Hashtag for the event, e.g. #GPVegas
            1. Once started a game with someone’s casual deck - turned out to be a crazy Thassa combo deck that got Omniscience out on turn 4.
            2. Don’t get mad - be polite
            3. Find a group that you enjoy
            4. Make new friends
          4. Not all decks are made the same
        7. If you are just there to play Casual Commander
          1. Visit your favorite artist
            1. Card signing are typically $1 -$2 per signature
              1. Make sure to UNSLEEVE your cards while you are standing in line. Don’t be that person making everyone wait while you are unsleeving double-sleeved cards
            2. Be prepared with what you want. You are not the only person in line.
            3. Most artist love discussing their artwork, but be respectful of their time, especially if they are busy.
            1. It’s really cool to meet and have conversations with MtG Celebrities. Most of the ones I have met are super happy to sign a playmat, and you’ll come out with an amazing, one-of-a-kind souvenir
            2. It’s good to have a few different color of sharpies available
            3. Also, a playmat with a bright color background, makes sure signatures show up really well. (For example, the first playmat I made with the BW logo was on a black background, which just didn’t work out all that well).
            4. Blank playmats are often available at the tournament site
          2. Bring a playmat and some sharpies!
            1. Panels include everything from format specific discussions, comedy sketches, to instructional how to’s.
          3. Attend a Panel
            1. Most events are held in large cities
            2. Visit and experience the local sites
            3. Some really great after-hours experiences can be had, not limited to a great dinner out with some cool podcast hosts :-P
          4. Get out of the Convention Hall
        8. Events are more than Game Play
      2. Maintain your Personal and Physical Security
    4. Attending an Event
      1. Be prepared
      2. Manage Expectations
      3. Have Fun
