          1. We looked at what the most likely Commanders for each player would be
          2. Determined cards we thought might be highly contested
            1. Ryan - Ramp
            2. Zack - Enters the Battlefield effects
          3. Determined what cards would be most important to our decks strategy
        3. Picking cards for the 99
      2. How we are making picks
        1. Community members can donate to their favorite content creator in the draft
        2. Each $5 donated to a player increases their overall budget by $1, and adds 5 points to their “Power-Up pool”
          1. “Cut the line” - 50 points - Make a pick instantly. Then the draft continues as normal. This does not take your turn for the round. Limit one per player
          2. “Wait your turn” - 100 points - Cause target drafter to go last this draft round. Limit one per player
          3. “Clone” - 250 points - This round you may select a card that has already been drafted. This allows you to break the rules of the rotisserie format. Limit one per player
          4. “Blatant Thievery” - 500 points - You steal a previously drafted card from another player. That player immediately makes a replacement pick. The player stolen from gets their budget returned for the stolen card. Limit one per player.
        3. Each player may spend their Power-Up points in the following manner:
      3. Community Engagement
    4. The Current Draft
      1. Here’s where the Rules/FAQ/Spreadsheet are
        1. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10oHVjnokpsGH1_PIrvSQv6Ikm6PdOXre?usp=sharing
          1. We have made these publicly available, so that ANYONE out there can run their own rotisserie draft
          1. Main tab “Group Picks” pulls all the picks into one easy place for your group and/or the public to follow along
          2. Stops folks from picking duplicates. This is important when there are nearly 600 individual cards picked
          3. Tracks your balance for you
          4. Formats the tweet, so you literally just have to hit a single button, and it will Tweet your pick, your remaining budget, the hashtag you have chosen, and @ the next person whose turn is after yours
          5. Creates some nice little charts and graphs that show your mana curve, card types, and colors
        2. The spreadsheet does everything for you
      2. Determine your players - We’ve done a draft with exactly 8 players, because this makes for 2 pods of 4 players, and should ensure decently powerful decks
      3. Set a budget - We chose 200, and this excludes mana-producing lands, because we thought that might be less interesting to watch, and it allows people to only have to make 70 picks instead of 100
      4. Determine your “Draft hours window”. Ours is currently from 10am - 10pm Central, but obviously this might change depending on your group
      5. Depending on how “available” your group is, this can take up to 4 weeks to make all of the picks
    5. How to run your own Rotisserie Draft
      1. https://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.team&teamID=47038
    6. Summary - This is super fun! We encourage anyone out there that has a playgroup to consider doing this. Let us know what you think, and there’s probably still time to get a donation in for a good cause:

    1. Disclaimer: This is a framework of skills that we think ALL Commander players can practice to get better at the game. We aren’t necessarily going to go into HOW to get better at these skills this episode, but we thought it was important to recognize WHAT the skills are. Maybe we’ll go into each of these skills, and how to get better at them in future episodes. To the Audience, let us know if that is something you would like!
      1. Read and understand a Magic card
      2. Mentally maintain board state
      3. Threat Assessment (If you can't understand the board state, little chance for you to accurately assess threat)
      4. Ability to Read the Table (ex. Karen is upset with Steve for blowing up her Blind Obedience, therefore I'll attack Charlie)

  1. Main Topic - A1 Bold Predictions for Commander 2019
    1. What do we know for really real
      1. Releasing August 23rd (Same weekend of MF Vegas)
        1. A special Sol Ring Commander promo (foil and non-foil) with new art by Mark Tedin will be released at Grand Prix Las Vegas, just before the release of Commander 2019.[2] It will be available through Commander events at MagicFests throughout the year, and at select conventions in 2020.
      2. Promo Sol Ring will not be the art in Commander 2019
      1. Four decks rather than five.
      2. Multiple viable commanders in each the deck
      3. Planeswalkers will not be the main commanders.
    2. Reasonable Assumptions
      1. TH, the Intern - Mono colored decks
      2. Joe Hoffman - Each deck will be themed by plane
      3. Andy Bently - Each deck will be one of the following themes, Tribal, Hard Control, Vehicles, and 7 Piece Combo)
        1. Example: Deck is UBRW, Partner 1 is UBW, Partner 2 is RBW
      4. Zack - 4 Color decks, with 3 color partner Commanders
        1. Enemy-colored Crowd Lands (these are the ones from Battlebond, Sea of Clouds, etc)
        2. A 5 card cycle of Mono-colored “Partners”, (1-1-1-2 in each deck), not designed to be commanders of the deck
          1. A 5 color Elemental themed deck (because Elementals feature prominently in standard right now)
          2. A Colorless Deck, with 3 new colorless legendaries
          3. A R/G Werewolf deck, with an awesome Werewolves matter Commander

  3. Ep 6 Community Spotlight:
    1. 406.3
  4. Commander Rules!
    1. Define: Lands that have an effect other than generating mana.
    2. We love these cards because they can act like spells, and can add power to your deck without taking up a spell slot.
    3. Caution: You should use these sparingly, as they often come with downsides, like coming into play tapped, or only adding colorless mana.
    4. Some Utility Lands, such as Maze of Ith, or Glacial Chasm, don’t add mana. When I build a deck I tend not to include these in my land slots (I think of them as zero cost permanent that makes me skip my land drop for the turn)
      1. 0 colors: ALL the Utility Lands!!!!
      2. 1 color: 8ish
      3. 2 color: 6ish
      4. 3 color: 4ish
      5. 4&5 color: 3ish
      6. Obviously this changes depending on how early you need certain colors of mana, or how color cost intensive your cards are (Cryptic Command, etc)
      7. You can run more of these the more solid the rest of your land base is (fetches, shocks, duals, oh my. But mention some good budget options here. Ravnica bounce lands, 5 color lands, Evolving wilds etc
    5. Also, the more colors your deck is, the less of these you can afford to run. A rule of thumb (and by no means perfect):
      1. Zero Utility Lands in the EDHRec top 100 for the past week, 2 weeks, or year.
        1. 31 - Reliquary Tower
        2. 40 - Bojuka Bog
        3. 79 - Kessig Wolf Run
        4. 83 -  Rogue's Passage
        5. 95 -  Alchemist's Refuge
      2. The following cards are the Utility Lands on the top 100 Lands for the last two years:
    6. Utility lands on EDHRec Top 100
      1. Maybe your commander is super important to your strategy, and your meta is counterspell heavy: Cavern of souls.
      2. Maybe you need a certain spell to resolve: Boseiju
      3. Sometimes you want to recur some junk: Hall of Heliod’s Generosity / Academy Ruins
      4. Maybe you want to destroy your opponent’s oppressive land: Strip Mine / Wasteland / Ghost Protocol
    7. You can use these kinds of lands to shore up a deck’s weakness:
      1. Expedition map
      2. Trinket Mage
      3. Sylvan scrying
      4. Weathered Wayfarer
      5. Any all purpose tutor

  2. Ep 4 Community Spotlight:
    1. Zack
      1. Game one - a player kept recurring wasteland and strip mine to destroy most of my lands. Lost to another player’s voltron’ed up commander, who also went on to win the game.
      2. Game two - Was able to get an infect counter on every player at the table. Got out Seedborn Muse and Karn’s bastion. The player on my right won with a combo where he had infinite mana and card draw, cast Enter the Infinite, put season’s past on top of his library, used beast within on all of our permanents, then uses reality shift to mill out libraries.
      1. Game 1 Urza comboed off on Turn 4
      2. Game 2 Urza comboed off on Turn 5
        1. Edgar Markov played by Ivan
        2. The Ur0Dragon played by Simon
          1. Michael Rite of Replicationed a Woodfall Primus and left Ivan (playing Edgar with a single plains). However, Ivan had Azor’s Gateway, and eventually flipped it, adding 40ish mana each turn
          2. Simon (Ur-Dragon) took out Michael
          3. Ivan (Edgar) used Forerunner of the Legion to find Mirror Entity. I had Raff in play and a Contagion Engine, and I politiced Ivan to attack Simon (otherwise I’d wipe his team of 1/1s)
          4. On my turn, I cast Karn Liberated, and exiled the flipped Azor’s gateway.
        3. Riku of Two Reflections played by Michael
      3. Game 3 Everyone played lower powered decks
    2. Ryan
  3. Games We Played
    1. 408.2 -> 113.3
  4. Commander Rules!
    1. Helmed by Raff Capashen, Ship’s Mage
      1. The idea here is that I can flash in Planeswalkers on the person to my right’s endstep, and then untap and wrath away all the creatures
      2. https://archidekt.com/decks/117406#Azorius_Super_Friends
      1. Planeswalkers - 23 (This might be too many)
        1. Tell the story of how TH does Hypergeometric Distribution
          1. In probability theory and statistics, the hypergeometric distribution is a discrete probability distribution that describes the probability of successes (random draws for which the object drawn has a specified feature) in draws, without replacement, from a finite population of size
          2. With 20 PW it’s roughly 80% chance to draw one on Turn 1, and it goes up from there
        2. 2 Gideons, 4 Jaces, 2 Karns, 2 Narsets, 3 Teferis, 2 Tezzerets, 2 Ugins
        3. Could have Ultimated Karn Liberated the turn I played him (but that’s not super fun).
        4. Almost ultimated Narset, Transcendant (Emblem, opponent’s can’t cast non-creature spells)
        1. Board Wipes! 6 (and don’t forget about Humility)
      2. Interaction - 10
        1. The Chain Veil
        2. Deepglow Skate
        3. Arena and Academy Rector (Omniscience, Inexorable Tide, Meishin, the Mind Cage, Mystic Barrier, Sphere of Safety
      3. Synergy - 9
        1. All mana based ramp, the usual suspects, Sol Ring, Signet, Thought Vessel, Mana Vault
      4. Ramp - 9
        1. Karn’s Bastion
        2. Kor Haven
        3. Kjeldoran Outpost
        4. Winding Canyons (This is greedy with only 5 creatures, but explain WHY)
      5. Lands - 38
        1. Many of the cards I’ve talked about previously fit into this category, so I’ll just go over a few of the others here:
          1. Teferi’s Protection (How Appropriate!)
          2. Ignite the Beacon
          3. Contagion Engine
      6. Flex - 10
      7. Summary: The deck played OK, but it feels like it needs more card draw. I was planning on all of my card draw coming from Planeswalker loyalty abilities, but that’s not super reliable.

      1. Ryan - Bitten by a radioactive Magic Card, and gained the ability to sense what my opponents were thinking, as well as block creatures with Flying
        1. Tell the story of when I first started playing
        2. 1994, at the age of 15. Taught to play by Jonathan
        3. My dad learned how to play, to make sure that the game wasn’t “demonic” as there was a Dungeons and Dragons panic back then
        4. Played all the time at a local book store named Book Source
        5. Played all through high school and dipped off a bit during college
        1. My Dad would give me $10 and let me go into the mall to buy Revised Starters and Legends and The Dark boosters from Waldenbooks on the promise I wouldn’t tell my mom he let me get them.
        2. Taught myself to play and played alone for a long time until a card shop opened up.
        3. We played in a card shop housed in a small stucco building that was attached to the bus station.
        4. Eventually my mom found out as i started to get better and winning local events.
        5. I took a break after Urza’s Destiny as I moved to a new town and didn’t know anyone who played.
      2. Zack - I was recruited by the CIA at a young age and taught the skills to play cards as part of my cover to fit in at a high school in a rural East Texas Town.
      3. Trudy’s story
      4. DMF Houston
        1. Ryan - I played up until Time Spiral (around 2006). Then kept playing somewhat irregularly very casually Kitchen Table magic with friends a few times a year
          1. Made my first Commander deck in August of 2013
          2. Came back to collecting cards again during Khans of Tarkir (2014)
        2. Zack - Brandon and I played a bunch of card games trying to ignore the allure and obsession we knew playing magic could become. Finally broke down in, bought two planeswalker decks, and realized what we had been missing.
        3. I went on spring break in 2013 to playrest Star Wars LCG with a friend who used to play competitively and sell MtG cards. He told me about a format called EDH. I was talking to Ryan and he mentioned he played that format too.

  3. Commander Rules!
    1. Define: Saltiness
    2. Let’s be honest: Everyone gets Salty sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to avoid. But maybe by investigating the way we feel, we can get salty less often, and perhaps handle the times when we do get salty, a little better?
      1. Saltiness might be different for different people
    3. What makes Ryan and Zack Salty?
    4. If you think about, with a base 25% chance to win a game, cards that are making you lose the game, shouldn’t produce as much salt as they do
      1. Remind ourselves that we are playing a GAME and that it’s supposed to be fun!
      2. Take a moment to think about your mood. Is there something going on in your life that is making you more prone to getting salty? Maybe now is not the time to get into a competitive situation
      3. Run more answers
      4. Not take things personally.
      5. Realize if someone is acting different than they normally do, and if so, some of your normal behaviors might be perceived differently, so dial it back a bit?
      6. Have the talk to prevent saltiness
        1. Ryan - Often times I like to play a mono-red (or more of my just-for-fun decks). I go into the game not planning to win. I still play to win, but I don’t have the expectation of winning, so I usually don’t get salty
      7. Focus on  having fun as much as winning
    5. What can we do about getting Salty? Are we getting salty more often than we should?
      1. Do you win more than 25% of the games?
      2. Do you often times find people groaning when you play specific cards?
      3. Are people not wanting to play with you?
      4. Are you a sore winner or loser?
    6. We like to turn the focus inwards, so we want to ask “Do we sometimes behave in a way that could contribute to other’s Salinity levels?
      1. Disclaimer: We don’t play against much MLD in our meta, so none of that made our lists
        1. https://edhrec.com/top/salt
      2. Also, EDHRec has a list of Salty cards, check it out here:

    7. Ryan and Zack’s Top 8 Cards that make them want to be salty.
    8. Summary. This is a great game, with an amazing community, let’s all try to make it a little better, and get Salty less often, and try to be more understanding when people we play with get Salty.

  2. Ep 98 Community Spotlight:
    1. Talk about Big Jon winning, narrowly
  3. League Update:
    1. Explain what draft is
      1. Get 3 sealed boosters booster
      2. Pack 1, Open pack, select a card, pass the remaining cards to your left
      3. Pack 2 same, but pass to the right
      4. Pack 3, same, pass to the left again
    2. Crack-a-pack
      1. It’s a great way to get new cards (Value!)
      2. It’s a way to get entertainment value out of opening booster packs
        1. It’s hard to keep in mind all of the cards you have drafted so far
        2. Have to keep in mind curve considerations
        3. Have to remember which color cards you have already drafted
        4. Figuring out which colors/color pairs are open
        5. You can actually feel pretty mentally drained after doing an entire draft
      3. Drafting feels very skill intensive
        1. Go into detail here, about puzzle solving
        2. How this is similar to Commander (No two games are the same)
      4. Novel gameplay situations happen
    3. Explain why we like draft
      1. Mention that in the past, you would draft more than 1 set at a time
        1. Morph! (Even 3 color morphs)
        2. Outlast
        3. Good Mana fixing (oh the joy of opening a fetch land!)
        4. Really powerful cards (because they were 3 color)
        5. Prowess
      2. Triple Khans of Tarkir
        1. Easily forced u/b or b/w
        2. Ingest mill
        3. Awaken - lands into creatures
      3. Triple Battle for Zendikar
        1. Investigate (Clues!)
          1. Ulvenwald Mysteries (2G - Enchantment when a non-token creature dies, investigate, when you sac a clue, make a 1/1 human token)
        2. Madness
        3. Flip cards (Werewolves)
        4. Delirium (And self mill to go along with it)
      4. Shadows Over Innistrad
        1. Was so awesome because it encouraged bluffing, and made for this excellent tension. Example:
          1. Tap: Sparksmith deals X damage to target creature and X damage to you, where X is the number of Goblins on the battlefield.
        2. Sparksmith - 1R - 1/1
        3. Battering Craghorn - Morph: 1RR - 3/1 First Strike
          1. Whenever Skirk Commando deals combat damage to a player, you may have it deal 2 damage to target creature that player controls.
        4. Skirk Commando - Morph: 2R - 2/1
      5. Onslaught
    4. Favorite draft formats of the past
      1. Ryan is definitely guilty of this some, and it feels kinda good when you are able to “Get Away with it” and still win the draft (Free value)
      2. Zack does it...
    5. How do we feel about rare drafting?
      1. In General
        1. Drafted at Mothership on Wednesday
          1. War of the Spark draft is really Fun!
            1. U/B
            2. Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage was really good
            3. Bond of Insight (3U sorc, each player mills 4, return up to 2 instant/sorcery)
            4. Angrath
            5. Blast Zone
            6. Opponent cast Honor the God-Pharaoh (2R, sorc, discard a card, draw two cards. Amass 1)
          2. Ryan drafted this:
            1. Fblthp Story Narset’s reversal
            2. Neoform
            3. Ashiok’s Skulker
            4. Kiora
            5. Mowu + teferi’s time twist
          3. Zack drafted this:
      2. In Person
        1. MTGA is really great.
        2. It’s super convenient
        3. You don’t have to dedicate a full night, all at once
        4. Drafting against bots feels kinda bad, but it does tie in to that convenience factor
      3. Online
    6. Drafting online vs in person
    7. Summary: Drafting is super fun! And, if you have a local game store, and have never tried it, you totally should!

  • Abilities which bring card(s) you own from outside the game into the game (such as Wishes; Spawnsire of Ulamog; Karn, the Great Creator) do not function in Commander.
