- 500.1
- Commander Rules!
- This topic is a little more on the psychological side of things, but I thought it would be an interesting thought experiment about why we play magic, and maybe why we like Commander chief amongst formats
- So, WHAT is Working for a Win? To me, it’s the notion that a close game or a hard fought game is more satisfying to win.
- I played a LOT of video games in the 80s.
-
- Super Mario Brothers
- Zelda
- Mega Man
- Metroid
- Ghosts n’ Goblins
- These games were TOUGH! If you didn’t grow up playing these games, and you’ve never gone back and played them you can look up ppl playing these games on youtube
- Zack’s game was X-Com UFO Defense
- In order to beat many of these types of games, it required a LOT of persistence, and banging your head against a wall in frustration. Many of the games didn’t have a save system, so you just had to play repeatedly until you got good enough to beat them.
- There weren't any walkthroughs you could look up on the internet. There wasn’t internet.
- Part of this may stem from growing up during the time that we grew up
- - That euphoric feeling when you finally DO best a video game.
-
- I remember I got in front of my TV and got my parents to take a “selfie” (ie polaroid) of me standing next to the credits when I beat the original Final Fantasy NES game.
- Zack - didn’t really get into beating games until college / post college when I beat the first few Halo games in a row as well as the first couple of Gears of War. It was an awesome feeling knowing these games were pretty difficult and there were a lot of times I just had to keep playing through to keep going. I remember getting soo mad at this on thing in GoW where I was behind like a counter and there was a dude on a cannon and two dude covering him and I’d jump out and die almost immediately. It took me two days to beat that I i remember being immensely proud when i did.
- So WHY do we like working for a win?
- Disclaimer: This next bit mostly applies to Multiplayer games.
-
- I think Magic players WANT a good game. I think most people would describe a good game as one that is CLOSE. Essentially, I think Magic players want to WORK for their WINs. (Audience, do you think this is true?)
- Even coming from a Standard / Modern grinder perspective games that are blowouts always felt like hollow victories.
- If a game is a good game, and a close game, it will often feel like a puzzle. We as humans like feeling smart, and so it’s only natural that we enjoy solving puzzles. Part of what makes Magic such an amazing game is that it continually generates new and unique puzzles for us to solve.
- Example story about Dana getting 6 alt-lose kills in-a-row in back-to-back games.
-
- Mirrodin Besieged:
-
- 2U Enchantment:
-
- As Mirrodin Besieged enters the battlefield, choose Mirran or Phyrexian.
- Getting good stories. Games where you have to Work for your Win often generate good stories. Another thing about us humans, we enjoy a good story.
- HOW does working for a win apply to Magic?
- Main Topic - Working for Wins
- Mirran — Whenever you cast an artifact spell, create a 1/1 colorless Myr artifact creature token.
- Phyrexian — At the beginning of your end step, draw a card, then discard a card. Then, if there are fifteen or more artifact cards in your graveyard, target opponent loses the game.
-
-
-
-
- Atemsis, All-Seeing
-
- 3UUU 4 / 5 Flying Sphinx
- 2U tap: draw two cards then discard a card
- When Atemsis, all-seeing deals damage to player you may reveal your hand and if there’s 6 different mana costs in the hand that player loses the game
- Once in league i was playing niv mizzet and just went off. I don’t remember exactly what happened, but I remember everyone at the table was cheering for me to get the win and I did!
- Zack any good stories you want to share?
- Zack - This speaks to my philosophy on EDH where I don’t care if i win or loose, I just want to see crazy things happen! I want to have awesome stories to tell whether I win or lose!
- Also, I think that games with good stories are more satisfying for EVERYONE involved, win or lose.
- Ryan - I personally haven’t played very much cEDH
- cEDH players players probably do a fair amount of this, cause they have lots of interaction to fight through, so maybe their deck wins in the same way most games, but they are trying to balance WHEN to go for it, and when to leave up interaction for their opponents
- If you’re out there, and you like/play a lot of cEDH, holler at us, and let us know if this is correct, and how you might feel.
- cEDH (or Competative EDH) may really feel like this.
- This is why we have the talk to ensure everyone is playing an equally powered deck and thus have an equal chance at winning.
- Why we all want decks of similar power levels, so that each game is not just a cake walk. Cake walks don’t generate good stories.
- Ryan - Working for a win is part of why I personally don’t like playing a LOT of tutors. I do play some, but I often find I like to play more narrow tutors
- Working for a win is also probably a lot of the reason that I like playing with O.P.C. (cause it oftentimes makes the puzzle harder, or at least more interesting, AND the pieces of the puzzle change depending on WHO I’m playing against)
- Zack - working for a win for me is why i always like to play some convoluted combo in my decks, but not run tutors for them. I like the idea of having to fight to survive long enough to get the pieces assembled. Usually these are alt win cons.
- Magic is the best game ever, and the ability to work for our wins is probably a big part of what makes magic so good. Did we get this right? Do you enjoy working for your wins? Let us know in the comments below, or via Twitter

- Commander Rules!
- What is the stable?
-
- It’s a place to keep the decks you play often, up-to-date.
-
- This is not for ALL of your decks (unless you only have a few decks)
- I have like 25 decks, and I’m not proposing to keep up with all of them, I’m proposing that you select the true gems, the ones you you always have fun playing, and thinking about
- This can be nice if you have decks in many different tools, such as Tappedout, or Archidekt, or the new Scryfall Deck Editor
- It’s a single place you can access that has all your decks in one place.
- There’s a social component to the stable as well. I propose that folks can share their Stable with other people, and that it can be a way to let other people (in person and on the internet) get to know them. A business card that you can hand to other folks that says “I’m this kind of Commander player!”
- I like the idea of doing this because I am constantly updating decks, but don’t have a way to track those changes and if they are improvements or not. Ryan - Historical Data!
- The chances of getting a deck exactly the way you want it the first time you play it is pretty slim.
- This lets you track what’s working for you and not working for you.
- A way to force us to consider upgrading decks
- Summary - This probably isn’t a new idea, and it’s probably something that some of you out in audience land already do. I just wanted to establish this idea, and get some conversation around this topic, maybe also establish some common terms we can use in this discussion. Also, I’m really bad at updating decks, and we’ll see this when I get to my personal Stable later this episode
- This is player dependant, but the more decks in your stable, probably the less attention you can give to each deck.
- Probably no more than 10 depending on how often you play.
- How many decks should be in a stable?
- Spreadsheets Obvs!
- How are we going to keep track of this?
- discussion
- Always brewing new decks (Ryan) vs Constantly seeking new cards to upgrade current decks (Zack)

- Created 8/22/2019
- Recently Updated! (4 cards in, and 4 cards out)
- Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer
- Created 2/26/2019
- There are some new cards I’m really excited to put in here (Tome of Legends and Robber of the Rich). I also know there are a few cards in here which are underperforming, and me getting all analytical about my Stable is going to help me put in the effort to keep the decks I love shiny and performing well
- Grenzo, Havoc Raiser
- Created 6/17/2017
- This was originally a “found deck”
- This is one that I’ve added and removed some cards from, but I can’t tell you what they are, because I haven’t been keeping track of it
- Gonti, Lord of Luxury
- 11/15/2018
- This deck is literally unchanged from when I built it. Granted, I had a great starting point to launch from (Thanks Jumbo Commander). This deck is really fun, and I play it all the time, and it deserves some attention.
- Braids, Conjurer Adept
- 12/18/2015
- Last, and definitely not least. This is probably my oldest deck, that I still consistently play. One of the reasons I’m so hesitant to update this deck is that it is one of my favorites, and it’s really hitting the sweet spot between flavor and function, and I don’t want to mess it up. If I keep the historical data, I can always go back to a previous version of the deck, and I don’t have to be scared of messing it up

- Ep 17 Community Spotlight:
- Welcome! You’re discovering the BEST format in Magic: the Gathering (We maaaay be biased, but hey)
- Who is this episode for? We assume that you are at least slightly familiar with Magic. Maybe you played a long time ago, maybe you’re brand new to the game, but you at least know the basic rules. Also, we think veteran players might enjoy listening to this episode, and we certainly hope that anyone out there will send this episode in particular to new players they teach, or anyone who is interested in learning about the greatest Magic format.
- Main Topic - New to Commander
- Arguably the MOST popular Magic format of all time!
- 40 life, multiplayer format, where you have a Legendary creature as your Commander
- Example: You choose Meren of Clan Nel Toth
- This means you can play Black Cards, Green Cards, Black AND Green cards, and any number of artifacts you want. You cannot play with White, Blue or Red cards. To further clarify you cannot play with Terminate because it’s got Red in it’s color identity
- Hybrid mana cards (Ex. Kitchen Finks) are both GREEN and WHITE in terms of color identity. So, Kitchen Finks cannot go in a mono-green deck.
- Your Commander’s Color Identity determines what cards you’re allowed to play.
- This means that you can only play ONE of each non-basic land card
- Commander is a 100 card SINGLETON format
- SO MANY! Cards all throughout the history of Magic
- There is a Banned list maintained at: http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php
- It’s actually a pretty small list, 39 cards at the time of this recording (In ALL the history of Magic)
- What cards are you allowed to play with?
- Why is Commander so great?
- It’s a SOCIAL format! Commander can be a time when you get together with your friends and just have a good time and laugh etc.
- I’ve made some life-long friends playing Commander
- The community is Amazing! We constantly see newcomers welcomed with open arms, and folks are always happy to help people become part of this community
- Ryan likes to play with Other People’s Cards, and built a whole Mono-red deck around it
- Personal expression! Commander is a format where players can really express themselves through the decks they build and how they play
- It’s the Battlecruiser format of Magic! Folks can play with the biggest, baddest cards, and there is more game space to have crazy things happen that wouldn’t in a normal game of Magic.
- Your skill in politics can be just as important as the power level of your deck. This leads to a natural balancing effect, where the power dynamics shift as the game goes on
- You can play super casual, all the way up to cEDH (Explain here that the format started off as Elder Dragon Highlander, a.k.a EDH, and that cEDH stands for Competitive EDH)
- It’s important to find a playgroup that fits your style, and power level.
- There are different levels of power when it comes to Commander
- Start with a precon! There’s no better time than now
- Find out when Commander Night is at your LGS.
- Decide who your commander is going to be. This can be a favorite legendary character from days past or it could just be a commander who has a mechanic you find interesting.
- Decide a plan of attack
- Look for cards that synergize with your commander or just look fun to play with.
- Use sites like Scryfall to do searches for specific things (ie. Landfall)
- If you’re coming up short of a full 100 you can do internet research on sites like edhrec and archidekt for deck lists
- Remember this is your deck, so build it in a way that will be fun for you and those you play with.
- How to decide what cards to put in
- Zack’s steps to make your first commander deck
- Tips from Discord and Twitter go here
-
- Ramp and Card draw are the building blocks of Commander
-
- Briefly Define Ramp and Card Draw
- With 40 starting life total, you can usually afford to spend the first few turns ramping. This will allow you to cast bigger cards, more quickly, and have a bigger impact on the game
- You are usually playing against 3 other opponents. So, for every card you draw, your opponents are collectively drawing 3. Having more card draw can lessen this difference.
- There are many reasons to want Ramp and Card Draw. Whole episodes can be devoted to these topics, but this is a good place to start
- Especially for new players coming from other formats that is a weird and unintuitive thing but it's important to understand this or there will be some social tensions and feel bads
- How the social contract works.
- Mana curve matters.
- Build a deck with a game plan and a direction
- Threat assessment, or more accurately, how to effectively deal with problem permanents/spells without drawing a ton of hate.
- How to build a solid mana base/ramp package.
- Settle on a list before buying singles.
- The stack
- Priority
- Play removal! Especially for artifacts and enchantments
- Board Wipes are important, but so is single target removal
- It’s OK to take time to READ all the cards! Don’t be intimidated by this, even myself as a veteren player, I have to read a card just about every turn of the game!
- There’s a LOT of cards, and this can be kinda scary, but it’s OK to NOT know everything
- Resources for learning more
-
- Commander is great! And now is a great time to be a Commander player with the new C19 decks just having come out.
- It’s a fun, Social format, to share with friends
- If you are new to Commander, let us know! We’d love to help you embrace this amazing format

-
- https://mtg.gamepedia.com/Core_Set_2020/Welcome_decks
- Each deck is a monocolored, thirty-card, ready-to-play sample deck, consisting of basic lands, commons, 4 uncommons and 1 rare.
- Zack - Open one of the decks, and fan it out a bit
- Teaching someone is a great way to cement your knowledge and understanding of a topic. Think about a time you’ve taught somebody at work a new product, or skill, you probably gained a greater understanding of the skill on your own

- How did y’all become so cool? Yet, @z4ck38 wants to play stasis
- If you were able to “Sarkhan” a previous Magic storyline (as in go back in time and change it), which ones would you change, why, and how would the ongoing story be affected?
- If you could make any change(s) (if any) to commander, what would it be? And why?
- what’s your pet card? And what card - no matter how good it is - you don’t like it?
- Are there any commanders you want to see we don't Really "have" yet? Like either story characters who don't have (good) cards or maybe a mechanic that doesn't have a commander yet?
- I'm building my love song to my favorite card type: Estrid-only enchantments. It will be heavy on control magic type auras. What win cons would you use? Thnx"
- What is one deck in any format outside of commander that you would like to play/pilot and why?
- What was your favorite deck you played at MF Vegas? Any memorable plays? Favorite deck you played against?
- Is there a Commander/color combination outside of your normal wheelhouse you’ve considered building but haven’t?
- "What commander cards won't you play because of the social contract? Is Armageddon ok? Winter orb? And on the other side of that, what cards do you include in decks to get the party started?
- If you could travel the planes with one Planeswalker, who would it be and why?
- If you could summer vacation on any plane where would you go?
