  5. Commander Rules!
    1. Obligatory disclaimer - We’re not telling you how to feel. We are simply discussing the results of polling on the subject of milling and stating why we feel the way we do.
      1. Millstone
      2. An alternate way to win, also a way to fuel your graveyard (ie your second hand)
    2. What is Milling?
      1. This tends to be especially true for newer players. I know I used to feel this way when I first started playing Magic. I also used to look at the top card of my library after mulliganing, I don’t do this anymore. To the folks out there, do you look after mulliganing?
      2. Ryan’s Dad: story about using Millstone
      3. I want to possibly convince folks out there that this isn’t that bad, and could even be a good thing. Here’s how I convinced Zack
    3. Some players really get upset when they get milled or Cards taken with Gonti/Grenzo
      1. Ryan asked these questions
        1.  Why are you sad when you get milled?
        2. Do you feel sad when you don’t draw a particular card during a game?
        3. Would you feel differently if the cards went to the bottom of your library instead of your graveyard?
        4. How would you feel if you could start with half of your deck in your graveyard?
        5. The mental energy you’re expending on thinking about the cards you could have drawn (or got milled), could be put to better use, like making a plan.
        1. Any number of possibilities could have been. Due to variance there is no way to guarantee the cards that would have milled would have been drawn.(Maybe a better way to phrase this is, it kinda just changes where your opponent cut your deck)
        2. The more you know what’s in your graveyard, the more you know about the other cards in your deck
      2. Zack said in general being milled made him feel slightly sad about the possibilities that could have been.
        1. Cards in hands are actual possibilities
        2. In this same way, cards taken with Gonti aren’t the same as cards taken with Blatant Thievery/Expropriate, cause you didn’t invest any resources like card/mana into the things being stolen
        3. Cards in your graveyard are a resource as well. Your opponent could cast Patriarch’s Bidding or Exhume for example
        4. Sometimes it does sting if your deck is built on a specific 2 card combo. I try not to rely on specific cards, because there’s no guarantee you’re going to see them during a game, unless you run a LOT of tutors, and that’s something I don’t frequently do.
      3. Being milled isn’t the same as discard
    4. This conversation started after a game with Zack and Ryan where Ryan played Mesmeric Orb and Zack expressed annoyance about being milled.
      1. How does it make you are milled by an opponent
        1. Happy - 25%

      2. How does it make you feel when an opponent's Gonti, Lord of Luxury targets you.
    5. We polled twitter and the general consensus was…
      1. Information about what’s left in your deck
      2. Deck thinning?
      3. An increasing number of EDH decks revolve around some sort of graveyard strategy.
    6. The upsides milling
      1. Run removal for the things that are milling you.
      2. Giant Eldrazi like Kozilek, Butcher of Truth or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
      3. You can run cards like Homeward Path
    7. What to do if you are being milled are cards taken
    8. Summary - Being milled can actually be a good thing. So what do you think about being milled? Let us know how you feel on twitter or in the comments.
