- A good stuff deck is a deck full of cards you want to play. Oftentimes these cards seem fun, but never seem to make the cut in other decks.

- Jeska, Thrice Reborn (True story, she’s been reborn three times, so including her original birth, she’s been born four times.)
- Deck Origin Story: Temur is my favorite 3 color combination, and I just felt like I needed a Temur deck. I had bought a Jeska, just because the super fancy version wasn’t super pricey ($10) and I knew it was seeing some play in cEDH, so I just wanted to have one, because I really like the partner mechanic. So, I had two choices, Thrasios, or Kydele. I was worried that Thrasios might make the deck seem more powerful than it really was, and I didn’t want to draw too much aggro.

- The first game, my deck was pretty slow, and Prophet did some absolutely disgusting things with Valakut Exploration and Nahiri’s Lithoforming, along with Amulet of Vigor
- Game 2, I got off to a faster start with Turn one Birds of Paradise, and turn two Sylvan Library. Got Seedborn Muse and Alchemist’s Refuge going, and then played an instant speed Archetype of Imagination, And got to live the Magic Christmas Land of Surge of Victory targeting Blasphemous act!

- It was really fun playing this Good Stuff deck! It definitely didn’t really have a plan, it just kinda played a lot of really fun cards. It really did remind me of playing in the earlier days of the Commander format.

- I like powerful decks too! It’s good to have a range of different options, and I think a GoodStuff option might be great deck to have in your arsenal
- Disclaimer: Everyone interacts with Magic differently, this may not be a way that you want to build and/or play decks. No one is wrong! These are just some alternative thoughts, that may lead people to broaden their horizons, and may lead folks to seek out new experiences.
- Pretty much how Zack builds all of his decks
- To me, it’s a deck where you are just playing awesome cards you already own, without paying particular attention to synergy with your Commander(s)
- What exactly is a good stuff deck?
- Build

- You know how you have those perennial *almost* good enough cards to make your deck? This is the place to play them
- You can think of this as a deck made almost entirely out of Flex spots.
- I had a Riku of Two Reflections deck, that just had fun cards. What’s better than 1 Simic Sky Swollower? TWO!
- I had a Keranos, God of Storms deck, man Hypersonic Dragon is just a sweet Magic Card
- Ertai the corrupted. Played things like biterblossom, the guile and dovescape combo, it had phyrexian arena
- I think back to when I first started playing Commander (Back in my day it was called EDH gosh darnit!). But seriously, I had decks that were just full of fun/cool cards
- This may be harder for newer players to do, as they don’t have as deep of a collection to comb through.
- It’s also just generally fun to look at Magic cards, and think of the wildest Magical Christmas Land scenarios!
- When I build decks like this, I tend to just thumb through a TON of cards, and just set cards aside that I like, or that make me smile, or remember some silly thing that happened in a kitchen table game, back in the day
- When I build a “good stuff” deck, I tend to eschew my typical form of spreadsheet building, which makes sure that I have all of the normal stuff, in the correct ratios, Ramp, Card Draw, Removal etc etc. This tends to lead me towards building less optimized decks.
- This is not to say that you shouldn’t build with intention, far from it! For example, you absolutely want to make sure that you have ways of ending games of Magic.
- It might be hard to build a tribal deck for this kind of thought experiment, because there will just be so many baked-in synergies. That being said, if it’s a very off-the-wall tribe, you can probably make it work.
- I am GLAD we’re getting lots of cards! I just sometimes think back to the days at the beginning of the format, where there were a LOT less Commanders to choose from, and oftentimes the decks felt more personal. I see new folks on Twitter experiencing Commander for the first time, and I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous. It’s pretty much impossible to unlearn knowledge gained through years of playing Commander, but I think it is possible to kinda recapture some of that nostalgia by making “good stuff” decks.
- Zack is also happy getting a lot of new commander cards. I remember when all i looked for in sets were commander cards and modern cards when i first started playing and it felt like you got maybe 1-2 commander cards a set.
- We have been getting a LOT of cards designed specifically for Commander, and I think a side-effect of this is that we are seeing a general power creep, or maybe even staple creep in the format.
- I like to think of it as smooth jazz
- You probably won’t have as much of a good time playing a GoodStuff deck against hyper-tuned decks. This is just a more specific case of “Have the rule Zero” talk. It might be really cool to get your playgroup together and talk about making some decks like this to play against each other. We know this isn’t possible for folks that don’t have a consistent playgroup. It also might be really cool to have a GoodStuff deck to play against newer players, if you’re lucky enough to find some to play against (It’s seriously cool to watch folks discover stuff! Like they pick up one of your cards, and their eyes just go wide, imagining stuff)
- It’s also super hard to do this when folks have drastically differently sized collections. You could do a budget limit, to try and get the decks to come out more equivalent, but even that is hard.
- It’s really fun to play against these kinds of decks, because you get to see so many infrequently played cards. You’ll get to have more of the, “wait, what does that card do?” moments
- You’ll probably get into a lot of “Novel” board states with decks like these (Although Commander does tend to bring about Novel stuff all the time, so maybe this isn’t as huge a boon to building a GoodStuff deck)
- You also probably need to set your expectations a little lower, when playing a deck like this. It’s not going to function like a well-oiled machine, and it’s probably going to play drastically different from game-to-game. This can be a good thing, if you’re just wanting to see what cool stuff can happen.

- My Gonti, Lord of Luxury deck is one that I just threw together out of cards I already had. It’s seriously fun to play, and it’s just super different every time I play it (this is also helped out by the fact that I’m casting OPC from different decks each time I play it)

- There is a lot of exciting stuff coming next year and that can def hit the wallet pretty hard. That being said, you don’t have to buy everything.
- For Example: I know I’m totally not psyched about a Lord of the Rings set personally, but in the end I’m totally glad it’s coming out for those who are very big LotR fans!

- Having a healthy amount of cards reserved for flex spots, is a good way to ensure you’re not hyper-tuning your deck. This can lead to a lower overall power level. Some folks out there have a hard time not over-tuning (nice place to plug Lenny’s Power Sink series on edhrec: https://edhrec.com/articles/author/lenny-wooley/)
- This idea is potentially more useful to folks that brew decks often, and don’t necessarily keep all their decks up-to-date when new cards are released (guilty!). However, I do see some merit to people who have like 3-5 decks that they frequently update. Maybe say earmark 5 cards as like “sandbox play area”. Heck, you could even do this with a star sticker on the inner sleeve
- If you use Flex spots in this way, you also greatly increase the chance of a deck feeling more “like you”
- Cards that you simply want to play that maybe aren’t synergistic with the deck.
- New cards you want to test out and see how good they are.

- In Roger and Arden I run Grafted Exoskeleton, it is an equipment, so it fits the deck in that way, but It’s also infect which IMO is just fun.

- The plan is also to start with a vanilla-ish creature in the Command zone, preferably of the same creature type as your class (Currently no Fighter or Sorcerer)
- It might be cool to let characters multi-class after a certain level, plus this would allow for decks to be 3 or more colors.
- By the end of the campaign (or maybe multiple campaigns) have a legendary creature, a class, and a 100 card singleton deck, hence the name Classmander.
- The idea: Play many games of Classmander over a long period of time, similar to a D&D campaign length. Basically a TTRPG but instead of dice rolling to resolve combat, you play games of Magic.

- This is the least fleshed out bit so far.
- You could also have a higher-level skeleton deck that runs cards like Skeletal Swarming and Death Baron
- The idea for this is to create “encounter decks”, so for example you could have a skeleton deck with regenerating creatures, that the players will have to team up to get out of the way, because regenerating taps the creature
- This is a spreadsheet with a tab for each class. I went through the exercise of creating the starting level 1 Cleric deck (I have added cards to some of the other Classes, but very few).

- The idea here is that you can put any sort of equipment or artifact or book. You know, flavorful stuff like Bag of Holding. Basically people playing in pods/campaigns will ask to have certain cards they want to add to their decks added to the item list

- Same idea as the items tab, but with creatures you want to add to your deck. Might start off with a base price for common, and then more for an uncommon, and more for rare, and more still for mythic Rare. Maybe legendary creatures cost a bunch? Still playing with this idea
- Hirelings
- The idea here is that we can have a Drizzt deck, or a Minsc deck. Some adventurer that can show up and either help the players, or be an obstacle.
- NPCs
- This is going to be a template, like the kind you print out for D&D characters, it’s still pretty rough currently.
- Character Sheet
- There isn’t much here, but the idea is that by level 20, which should be max level, you will have:

- Starting life total of 40 (maybe we can let this go lower/higher based on class?)
- 7 Starting hand size
- A cool legendary creature at the helm of your deck
- Lots of sweet cards in your deck. We can even have some cards gifted to each character upon level up

- We do not have a campaign created, but would be cool if we eventually get there.
- In the meantime, it might be fun to get a party together, and just play a few rounds against some of the encounter decks, and see what leveling up could look like
- The idea here is that all good adventurers take the time to keep their skills sharp, so why not have a sparring match (Montage!) against 3 other players of similar level? Good way to gain experience, and maybe gold.

- The plan is to let Patrons contribute to the spreadsheets. Ideally, a single patron could take on the challenge of creating the level 1 deck for a particular class.
- Also, we plan to add a Slack channel, so that people can share ideas. Say, like Zane wants to make the Sorcerer deck, but maybe Andy Bentley has some ideas to share,
