  4. Ep 92 Community Spotlight:
    1. This episode we are gonna say 2-Drop, and that means a creature with 2 mana value.
      1. They compete with Mana Rocks/Ramp
      2. I believe they are mostly utility creatures, and not often beating down
      3. They can often come down after turn two, and still impact the game (in fact some of them may not be at their best on Turn 2).
    2. Two-Drops are a pretty interesting card in Commander.

      2. What was the very first Commander deck you ever made?
      3. What is your favorite deck to date? Also, is it blinged out? What kind of bling do you like most foil/old border/beta/etc?

    2. There’s been a couple of fun moments with you on GameNights
      1. What do you want to say to the folks out there that think Infect Damage should be increased above 10?
      2. What is your process for building an infect deck?
        1. Joshua Swope asks: “What is a fun way you've forced infect in a non-infect deck?”
        2. Scraignoth asks: “You've made a name for yourself playing a mechanic which a number of people felt was unfair or should be banned. What advice do you have for players who are going through similar "community" pressures to change how they play?”
      3. Questions from Patrons
    3. I think we have to talk about infect
      1. Do you often start with a Commander and go from there?
      2. Do you start with an idea and then find a Commander?
      3. Do preview cards get your brewing juices flowing?
      4. Sometimes I get inspired by watching some content, and think, that would be a really cool deck to build. Does this happen to you?
    4. Let’s talk about your deck building process in general
      1. How many/which decks have you brewed during quarantine?
      2. How often are you playing these days?
    5. How has Magic been for you during the pandemic?

    1. Explain how it’s “one or more” but only get to make a copy of one thing.
      1. Shapeshifter Tribal
        1. This would be kinda similar to some builds of Mistform Ultimus
          1. https://edhrec.com/commanders/mistform-ultimus
          2. Thanks to Lenny for suggesting I look at Mistform Ultimus on EDHRec
          3. Basically taking advantage of having a lot of creatures in your deck that are ALL creature types. Think Azami, Lady of Scrolls here
        1. This one is kinda different from shapeshifter tribal, in that you could go all in on flavor here and just have all kinds of clone effects, including things like Mirrorpool and Glasspool Mimic
      2. Copy/Clone Tribal

          1. 5 Caged Suns!
      4. Creating lots of copies of powerful permanents
    2. There are lots of ways to build this deck!
      1. Here’s the list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/6uk6QfbKo0OVAkcCXgOQ0A
      2. There’s just so many different cool things you can do with this card, that I decided to just jam them all together! So let’s talk about some of the categories, and some of the neat things you can do.
        1. These are kind of the “vegetables” for this deck, like they are the cards that make your Commander work. If you’re going the more cEDH route, these might be the most important cards to consider in your deck. Figuring out how many of these to play will be tricky.
          1. I put “target permanent” in the first tier because I want to do the Locus thing. Read Cloudpost and Glimmerpost here
          2. Clockspinning
          3. Dream's Grip
          4. Gigadrowse
          5. Hydroblast

  4. Ep 86 Community Spotlight:
    1. Disclaimer: This is not the only way to play EDH, people can and should play this game the way that makes them and their playgroup the most happy. That being said, it’s sometimes fun to see how far you can push the limits. Also, it’s often nice to have an assortment of different power levels, so that you can play in any pod, and maybe also great if it’s the end of the evening, and you don’t quite have time for a longer game.
      1. A deck that brushes up against cEDH. Maybe a 1-or-2 holds barred instead of no holds barred? A deck that tries to be super powerful, while remaining just shy of cEDH.
      2. Disclaimer: Neither Zack nor Ryan are cEDH experts, so we may get some of this wrong, but we think it’s a useful framework for a discussion
    2. What is a “High Powered Deck”?
      1. This might be a way to intentionally restrain yourself, and as we know restrictions can breed creativity
        1. Cheap Interaction
          1. Most decks play some of this already, example: Swords to Plowshares
          1. Stuff like Winter Orb and Armageddon, or wheels + Hullbreacher/Narset, Parter of Veils
        2. Stax pieces
          1. Stuff like Aven Mindcensor or Dranith Magistrate
        3. Hate Bears
        4. I think you can include some of the above in any of the variations of Pick 2, although you always want to make sure you’re having the Rule 0 discussion, especially if going the Stax route!
      2. cEDH is built upon a few different pillars. The 3 we just mentioned are probably some of the most important. Here are some others
    3. Fast Mana/Tutors/Combo: Pick 2
      1. I thought it might be fun for us to power rank the different variations on the fly, so listed in no particular order are
        1. Fast Mana + Tutors
        2. Fast Mana + Combo
        3. Tutors + Combo
    4. Which to choose?
      1. Fast Mana + Combo
        1. This seems like one of the more difficult builds to pull off. You’ll want to have lots of different redundant combos, because without tutors, you may not see all the right pieces
        2. Lots of card draw to help you assemble your combo pieces
        3. Also, self mill can be a way to “virtually draw” a lot of cards if you have lots of ways to recur things from your graveyard
          1. Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and Phyrexian Devourer
          2. Niv-Mizzet (Parun or Firemind) + Curiosity
          3. Azami, Lady of Scrolls + Mind Over Matter
          4. Godo, Bandit Warlord + Helm of the Host
        4. This might also include a deck that has a single card combo with the Commander
        1. This would be a deck that tutors for answers to specific board states, it doesn’t tutor for combo pieces.
        2. Sometimes a deck may want to include a lot of fast mana if the “Mana Value” of the Commander is medium to high.
        3. Some of my first Commander decks were this way, with a TON of tutors, and lots of mana rocks/dorks, and just general good stuff, or cards that had high synergy with the Commander.
        4. This is the type of deck where you really restrict yourself from playing any combos, and you get super sad when you accidentally find a combo.
      2. Fast Mana + Tutors
        1. I think this one depends on where you draw the line for “Fast Mana”. Does Sol Ring Count? Signets? Normal Commander Ramp? This one might be the closest to cEDH, especially depending on how cheap the combo pieces are (Think Thassa’s Oracle + Demonic Consultation)
        2. I think most players will allow for normal commander ramp in this category.
        3. Personally, I think Tutors and Combo should be the strongest of the options, but in my experience it’s not always worked out.
        4. I think the density of combos and tutors you are running factors in here as well. If you’re running like one combo and two ways to tutor it, you’re probably going to have a rough time.
      3. Tutors + Combo
        1. Zack
          1. Yawgmoth has tutors (Demonic, Vampiric, Grim, Recurring Insight, Doomsday) and combos. Aetherfux/Bolas’ Citadel/Divining Top. The only “fast mana” I run is Sol Ring, etc.
          2. Thrasios / Tormod has combos, but no form of fast mana or tutoring. I’ve considered making this sultai and adding tutors.
          1. I just brewed Samut, Voice of Dissent after watching Joe Johnson play his version on “I Hate Your Deck” Normally, I pull back quite a bit on cards I include in a deck. For example, Survival of the Fittest and/or Worldy Tutor would probably be quite good in my Ashaya, Soul of the Wild deck, but I chose not to include them. I decided I really wanted to go all-out on the Samut deck, so it’s got all kinds of nice cards in it. I intentionally avoided combos, so no Kikki-Jikki + Felidar Sovereign. This deck falls into the “Fast Mana + Tutors” permutation
          2. I’ve got Azami, Lady of Scrolls + Mind Over Matter as mentioned above
          3. My Winota, Joiner of Forces is close to cEDH, but mostly just in how quickly it can win. It’s got a decent amount of Fast Mana, and has so many token generators, that it consistently has a lot of creatures to attack and get Winota triggers with that it feels “combo-y”
          4. Emry has “Fast Mana + Combo”
        2. Ryan

  4. Ep 84 Community Spotlight:
    1. What is a warm blanket card?
      1. Pretty much a reactionary card that can save your bacon. These will be at instant speed for the most part.
    2. There’s nothing quite like that feeling when you’re holding one of these cards. Yeah, things can still go wrong for you, and yes counterspells exist, but knowing that you’ve got a plan for whatever comes you way, brings me a warm snuggly type feeling.
    3. These types of cards are one of the big reasons I like playing at instant speed
    4. Running a lot of these cards can bog your deck down, and they aren’t often great in aggro style decks. You want to make sure you don’t go too far overboard with these, because you can be left with a deck that “can’t loose” but doesn’t really have a “plan to win” and some folks don’t enjoy playing against decks like that.
    5. Ways to protect your board, or protect your combo could go here as well.
      1. One of the benefits of cards like this is that you only use them when you need to.
      2. This is kinda the other side of the boardwipe coin. Basically, most boardwipes, you have to divine your opponent’s intentions, and go ahead and use them if the board is getting a little bit messy, or if you’re in a meta with a bunch of “wild cards”. With these types of cards, you only use them when you’re being attacked.
      3. If you’re known for playing cards like this, people may less often attack into you when you’ve got open mana. This is pure gravy when you have other things you can do with your mana at instant speed, like say cast a stunt double, or activate Kenrith, the Returned King. Vedalken Orrery is a good card for a reason.
      4. Often times, these cards can catch opponents unaware, and really leave them open for business

    1. Of all the things I love in magic, Sultai, snow lands, and mana doubling are pretty high up there. So after Ryan and I spoke about Jorn, God of Winter last week it got my gears going and I built this deck.

Yes there are a lot of combos, but they all require quite a bit of setup and you can scale the power up or down based on the number of tutors you run by removing some of the combos we talked about and adding other good stuff.

    2. What are some fun decks you’ve built?
      1. Do you start with the commander or the 99?
      2. Or maybe some out-of-left-field concept?
    3. Deck building Process
      1. What can folks out there do, if they want to try their hand at making a unique deck?
    4. How do you get your inspiration?
    5. Does being up front and telling everyone your self-imposed restrictions actually work? I mean this as: Do people actually leave you alone? Or do you still draw a lot of hate?
      1. What makes a Commander “too good?”
        1. Urza for sure
      2. Which Commanders currently fit the “too good” mold?
    6. Is part of this the whole seeing a “busted commander” previewed, and then realizing you won’t have fun building it normally, but still wanting to experience this card?
    7. How do you find these wonderfully weird and obscure cards?
    8. Is there anything you feel like you do differently than most players?
  5. Main Topic - Lenny’s deck Building 101
  6. Summary - Building unique decks can be a fun experience, it can also stretch your creativity, which just might make you a better deck builder overall. What are some of the most cool/unique deck concepts you’ve built yourself, or even just played against?

  4. Ep 80 Community Spotlight:
    1. Today we’re talking about rules new and old players alike might get hung up on. Magic is a complicated game, made even more complicated by the fact that we shortcut things. Today we’re going to go over some patron submitted things that players might get hung up on.
      1. +1/+1 counters and -1/1- counter negate one another.
      2. Ie. If a creature has 2 +1/+1 counters on it if one becomes removed with yawgmoth for example, it will be left with a single +1/+1 counter.
      3. This can matter for cards like Marchesa, the Black Rose, or any creature with Persist or Undying
    2. Interaction between -1/-1 vs +1/+1 counters
      1. Mention the shortcut here. This can be quite confusing for new players that haven’t played on digital platform where you MUST go through all of the motions.
    3. Attacking:
      1. https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Combat_phase
      2. Beginning of Combat Step
      3. Declare Attackers Step
      4. Declare blockers step
        1. If there is First or Double strike the combat phase is extended to have another combat damage step.
      5. Combat Damage step
      6. End of Combat step
      7. Talk about the card Reconnaissance here.
    4. Combat Phases
      1. Trample creatures assign lethal damage to all creatures blocking them, and then the rest carries over
        1. Ball Lightning vs Llanowar Elf
      2. Simple example:
    5. Trample
      1. Static Ability
      2. 702.2b - A creature with toughness greater than 0 that’s been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action
    6. Deathtouch
      1. As we mentioned above “Trample creatures assign lethal damage to all creatures blocking them, and then the rest carries over”
        1. Aggressive Mammoth (8/8 Trample)
          1. Mammoth is blocked by:
          2. Hill Giant x3
          3. What do you think happens?
        2. Ohran Frostfang
      2. Here’s the thing, even one damage from a creature with deathtouch is considered lethal (702.2c), so here’s a scenario:
    7. Trample + Deathtouch.
      1. Think of these as creatures with spears, or some other long weapon
      2. Black Knight vs Grizzly Bear
    8. First Strike
      1. This creature deals First strike damage, and then normal damage. This can cause deals damage triggers to happen twice.
        1. Prophetic Flamespeaker
    9. Double Strike
      1. This is NOT bringing a creature back from your graveyard, but it would make sense if it was...
      2. This has mostly been replaced by “Becomes indestructible until end of turn”
        1. It’s a replacement effect
          1. Remove all damage marked on it
          2. Tap it
          3. If it’s an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat
        2. The next time ~ would be destroyed, instead:
      3. Regenerate does a few things.
    10. Regenerate
    11. Mind control effects and the summoning sickness the creature gets when you control it.
      1. https://blogs.magicjudges.org/rulestips/2012/08/multiplayer-monday-what-happens-when-a-player-leaves-the-game/
        1. (i.e., library, hand, exile, battlefield, graveyard, command, stack)
      2.  all objects OWNED by that player leave the game.
      3. all control effects controlled by that player end
      4. anything still controlled by that player gets exiled.
    12. What happens when players leave the game?
      1. A zone. The stack is the zone in which spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities wait to resolve. See rule 405, “Stack.”
      2. FILO or LIFO (they mean the same thing)
      3. Spells and abilities are put on top of the stack as the first step is being played, and are removed from it as the last step of resolving.
      4. Any spell or ability that uses the stack can be 'responded to' by all players, meaning players have a chance to play spells and abilities with it still on the stack.
      5. Since the stack resolves in order from top to bottom, those spells and abilities will resolve before the spell they were played "in response" to. Spells and abilities on the stack resolve one at a time, with a chance for each player to play spells and abilities in between each resolution.
      6. Actions that do not use the stack, such as paying costs, playing mana abilities, or turning a face-down creature with morph face-up, cannot be responded to.
    13. The stack
      1. Players get priority
      2. Holding Priority (this can be tough on Arena, but it can be done!)
      3. Priority is the right to cast a spell, activate an ability, or take a special action.
      4. Players can't cast spells, activate abilities or take special actions at a time when they do not have priority.
      5. The player with priority may put as many spells or abilities on the stack as they wish, but before anything can resolve all players must "pass priority" without adding anything further to the stack.
      6. Priority starts with the player who takes the first action, then rotates clockwise to each player.
    14. Priority
      1. State-based actions are game actions that happen when any of a set of improper conditions arise in the game. Whenever a player would gain priority, state-based actions first check for certain game conditions. If any of those conditions are met, the necessary actions are carried out simultaneously as a single event. Then, any triggered abilities go on the stack and the check is repeated. Once no conditions for state-based actions exist, the appropriate player gains priority.
        1. List of State Based actions can be found here: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/State-based_action
    15. State Based Actions
  5. Main Topic - Rules
